For Sale Pharos Outdoor 5GHz 23dBi WiFi 5 Point-To-Point PtP Link Kit

I'm not in the market for these but I have a couple of questions. Do you connect one end to an internet supply and then you can span a distance with the other one picking up the signal as a WiFi outlet? If my understanding is correct, what sort of line of sight distance can the signal be sent?

Yes, that's pretty much how it works. You'll also need power to it which can be done using PoE.

What sort of distance? A lot of things will influence this, including the weather but at 23dBi I would expect you'll still get some signal up to something in the region of 15 miles (possibly more in ideal conditions) but in real world scenarios I probably wouldn't push it more than 3-5 miles.

Thanks that's interesting, as for distance a I was thinking of a couple of hundred yards.

Depends on the hardware.

These particular ones are 'long range' so will travel further than some others.

You need to accept that any of these point to point solutions won't give you 100% of your signal by the time it's been received but in situations where running cable isn't practical then they can work well enough.

I don't mean to sound negative - we used to install these at commercial sites so they are more than fit for purpose.

You just need to understand the strengths and limitations. A couple of hundred yards would be a doddle for these particular ones.

I've considered these though a bit of an overkill in terms of quality for my needs. I have the POE switch in one garage I assume that would feed one and id need the same switch in a secondary building to get the signal inside for ethernet or WiFi?

Buy cheap, buy twice :D

With apologies to @dmac for hijacking this thread a bit....

Makes sense to use the existing PoE switch if you have one, but you don't need another PoE switch in the secondary building as you can use a PoE injector (which I believe these come with as standard, but check with @dmac on that)

That's essentially something that plugs into mains power and has an ethernet port on it that you can use to power the receiving antenna. You'll then have a second ethernet cable for the data coming out of it and into whatever you are using in the secondary building as your LAN extension.

Superbly explained there @sparkplug

Im sure @dmac won't mind his ad being bumped by our quest for knowledge. May even push this over the line for someone like me who has a house load of wifi-ness with a very limited understanding of how it actually works

At a single point to point level they're pretty easy to set up. If you've set WiFi access points up then this isn't really any more complicated.

Now, when you're connecting a couple of dozen of them onto a former military base (because digging through that amount of reinforced concrete to lay fibre is eye wateringly expensive) then it starts to get more complicated... :D

My favourite from that site was one customer who complained that they couldn't get mobile signal in their unit. We didn't provide mobile signal or phones, but they were convinced it was something to with us or with the equipment we had installed.

I went over to have a look and fairly quickly identified the issue. They had rented a space that was formerly a nuclear bunker with reinforced concrete walls about four feet thick.... :D

But I digress...
