i'm going to buy some extra lights for my 1200gs, does anybody have an opinion (!) on whether or not the extra £340 is worth it for the PIAA "H.I.D." set over the 510 "Super White" lights....? are there any other lights i should be considering?

do both (the PIAA) sets need an extra switch mounted? or did i read somewhere that the indicator cancel switch could be wired to operate the extra lights.....

how much should i expect my BMW dealer to charge to fit the new lights at (the same time as doing the) next service?
thanks for your help.

Speak to Allan aka BTBR, he's the man to speak to about fitting lights. Beemer are sure to rip you off for the fitting.

I use the PIAA 510, they are extermly good lamps, I don't think I could justify the extra for the HIDs.

A good set up is Hella Mirco DE's for driving lights with the 510's on main beam. Hella's are wired using a switch which works off the indicator cancel button, this is available from NippyNorman's.

Do a search on lighting, there really is shit loads of info!

HID's are overkill in 99.9% for most normal driving. You will also have issues with oncoming cars since the light is sooooo blinding. My opinion would be to get the Piaa 510 SMR's and a nice set of Hella micro de fogs. Couple all that with a good lightbar and you will still have some $$$ left over for a really good dinner. Just my .02cents or quid in your dollars .

Nick,

Will these be suitable for the R1200GS?

Thanks

have now been quoted £105 for fitting extra lights....BMW dealer.

HID

Steve, I fitted Touratech HID main beam replacement 18 months or so ago - best thing I ever did. Not only brilliant brightness, also a much wider spread of light and a direct replacement for standard unit - no additional switches or relays.
I work near Heathrow and live in Kent so if it's convenient and you want to see it in action let me know. I commute every day.

give me a call if you are still interested in lights for your 1200gs, unable to pm you.. cheers nick 01869 346186.

I have the PIAA HID Lights on mine, the kit comes with all the wiring + switch+ lightbar... the difference has to be seen to be appreciated...my dealer - Prestige (Bexleyheath) has just swapped them over to my new 1200, so they know exactly what needs to be done and how to fit all the ballasts, etc - so it might be worth giving them a call and get your service + kit fitted by them...
