Hi,

My R1200GS has been through 3 standard halogen headlight bulbs since April 06 (13000Miles).

I was considering trying the PIAA bulb the main reason to provide additional light.

These bulbs are very expensive compared to normal bulbs so I have 2 questions:

1. Do they really improve vision at night and provide better lights?

2. Do they last much longer than the standard bulbs? These are supposed to be anti-vibration. Has anybody had any experience with these bulbs?

They are good but not that good.

They are better to be seen with rather than seeing more.

They give off a slightly blue/white light.

Took the bike off road alot, never had probs with them blowing.

I had mine about a year, sold them on. I wouldn't pay £60 a pair again.

Cheers exactly the type of answer I was looking for.

I have recently added hela fogs and ff50 lights so from what you are saying the fact that you dont see much more then I think I will stick with the standard bulbs.

I put some Osram Silverstar lamps in my 12, granted they're not 50% brighter, but they are certainly whiter than the standard lamps. I could tell the difference. I gather the Philips Vision Plus are a slight improvement over standard lamps too. Both can be had for about £10-£15 a pair on ebay.

These things have allegedly been developed especially for motorcycles .. they have a slightly orange cast or something that makes them stand out if you're in a line of traffic

I don't know if they are any better than the normal 50% brighter lamps.

(1) yes they improve vision ... light output from a garden variety normal H7 bulb is about 1400 lumens. The PIAA bulbs put out about 1600. You might want to note tho that the Philips 50%+ bulbs and the Osram bulbs put out more like 1700 lumens and beat the PIAAs in a recent UK test (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/producttests/60539/bulb_test_h7_blue.html) ... and the Philips and Osrams are cheaper

(2) All "overdrive" bulbs have a shorter expected life than standard bulbs. Standard H7s have a life expectency of 500 hrs. Overdrive bulbs are in the 250 - 350 hour life expectancy.

I've fitted a pair of Phillips GT150 bulbs (Nippy Normans) with marked improvements in night riding. Not as expensive as PIAA ones, but still more than a normal bulb. However, worth it. :thumb
