Picking up a nice 1200GS this week and would be greatfull for some advice. Firstly its only done less than 2000 miles and is 20 months old, and will be out of warranty later this year. Im concerned that when I start pilling on the miles and the warranty is out all the bugs still to come out of the bike will be down to me. Now, I know I could take out extended warranty but at nearly £700 its a lot of dosh. Question is do you think Im likely to have many issues over the next 5,000 miles? Its been dealer serviced so I assume that all the up dates have been done but I will check. Next question when I get it back and I have along journey to get it home some 300 miles what should I start checking to prevent some of these potential issues that could accur? Im intending to do a couple of thousend miles on her before the warranty runs out to try to see whats likly to go wrong with her.

Hi 1200 bmer

Advice/help??? :nenau

Just ride the thing and enjoy it :thumb The more miles ya do the better it will get IMHO. :bounce1

Welcome....... :clap

You can get a warrenty from elsewhere for much less than BMW's £700. Do a search on Google :thumb

use your four months wislely any sign of anything register your concenrn straight away with the dealer ...
personally i would have a extended warranty there are several private companies providing the service how good it it i dont know ...bmw seldom does cheap failures final drives gearboxes clutch seal s fuel pumps are quite common
quite few people have used these people full platinum warranty is about 320 quid
http://www.warrantyworks.co.uk/ but i have heard no feedback on how peoples claims have been dealt with

if i had to pay for the recovery and repair of my two 1200s out of warranty it would run into to thousands
..320 would be a wise investment it seems to me that some people have no problems for 20thousand miles and beyond ..others aare plauged by repeated failure s at nominal milage ..yes thats me
...as i understand it dealers are buying these policys themselves and including it the price of some 2nd hand bikes

like any 2nd hand bike yer pays yer money and take your choice ...or not as the case may be

Two thoughts come to mind. The first is that its a bit late to start worrying about reliability after you have bought the bike - you should have thought of that beforehand. The second is that you are worrying unduly because most of whatl you read on this forum are the moans of unhappy owners - bye and large the happy ones dont post much. After all, what is there to say if your bike, like mine, gives no problem.

Nothing BMW is cheap, and that includes the repairs and parts. There is little you can do to anticipate any of the common problems, except perhaps to buy the 3rd year garauntee. Maybe you could double check the fuel pump and make sure the top doesnt fill with water. And you can probably help the corrosion on the front cover by removing it, getting rid of the foam, and paintind the uinpainted ally with something. Maybe Waxoyl. And then replace the cover. But as far as the gearbox, its seals and the rear drive are concerned, its all down to luck.

But dont worry overmuch. Probability is you wont have any problems. The bikes arent as reliable as Jap bikes (or even Triumph) but that doesnt mean they all fall to bits. They dont.
