Looking to spend a week in the Picos this May, around the middle of the month.

I quite fancy the idea of camping in one place for a couple of nights and using it as a base, leaving all the luggage at the campsite.

Any idea what type of weather to expect at that time of year? We've toured the Pyrenees at that time and it can be cold with a fair bit of snow lingering, but the Picos are further South.

Also, are campsites likely to be open mid May?

I stayed in a campsite in Potes (about quarter of a mile outside town -first one you come to after you've come thru town from the coast) first week in June last year, no snow anywhere.
Would recommend a 3 season sleeping bag and a Thermarest sleeping mat cos it got a bit cool and damp when the sun went down.
The campsite was well kept and also had a decent shop bar and restaurant.

Stayed in Potes in early June a couple of years ago. Certainly warm enough to camp, but we stayed in the hostel La Serna in the main square. It was about £7 per night for a twin with en-suite. Why camp?

Potes

I've also stayed in potes several times over the last ten years or so, Its a great place to base yourself. stayed in second half of may a few years back and camped at the campsite already mentioned. Ten min walk into town and a swimmin pool. but at 10 euro's ish you will get a room in the hostel/hotel on the main square near the castle thingy.

Oh and did i mention its not a bad night out.

Also a nice hour or so ride away is a cable car which takes you up a hair raising cliffe face up to the glacia like mountain tops well worth a gander.(thats a look in Yorkshire speak)

That'll be the cable car at Fuente De. Do not decide to walk up... I tried it and regretted it mightily every time a cable car passed over me head! From the cable car station there's a load of good walking/scrambling routes. A couple of miles on is a mountain hut that made of part of an old warship. Photo shows Potes main square, with the usual sustenance...
