11 GSA, still using oil after nearly 7000 miles, (3/4 ltr in 160 miles bit much) had BMW sort a problem (piston rings assembled wrongly) 650 miles this weekend 900ml of oil, still weeping from cylinder bolt, and oil on sump guard. I am hoping to have it sorted cos we are S France bound next week and at the moment just don't feel confident for the first time in a BMW.
Needing some reassurance at the moment.
Any one else have a proper oil burner in the new model?

Hi
Sorry to hear about your problem. I bought a ex demo last year which eats oil at the rate of about 1.25 to 1.5 litres per 1000 miles. Very disappointed as you have to take and top up wherever you go. Not what expect from a bike of this quality

Are they all different?

2010 GSA oil consumption now neglibable at 6000 miles. two points for consideration:

1. Does yours have any furhter underlying problems as that consumption seems waaaaaay waaaaay over the odds.
2. I trashed the arse off mine during run in (still never went over the rev limits but was ALWAYS bouncing off them).

Nevertheless I hope you get it sorted mate and don`t forget - yes there is oil in FrogLand but the buggers shut on a Sunday (the whole Country that is) so please don`t get caught short - buy an emergency bottle to put inside the fairing cavity too.

Regards,

Mark

Already have the NN bottle securely stashed, and in use.
Dealers have re-aligned the piston rings to stop the really heavy loss, but down to Felixstowe and back this weekend and nearly a Ltr in less than 700 miles. Tail pipes are sooty, but it's dry soot (if you know what i mean), found oil in the bash plate, and a weep from a cover bolt, which i'm sure Mill will sort (no dealership problems to gripe about):thumb2
If it still burns oil then I guess i'll be using a phrase book soon enough ;)

Hey Jasper, thats a bit more than mine. You're right though, i didn't expect it from the new GSA cos the RT i had last year was tight after 600 miles.
Still having had GSs before i am aware that they use oil, but didn't expect the new engine to be as, if not more heavy, on the lubricant front.
Hope yours settles down soon too then mate.

THanks
I suspect it was poor running in, will try to sort out from dealers. Will name names if no help, my first GS and never had such problem with any other bike, hope you get yours sorted.

My 2011 model used a negligable amount of oil up to the 600 mile service and then I ran it four days later down to Austria fully laden , in 170 miles of UK motorway (max 70 mph) and then 700 miles of Autobahn work at 80 to 90 with the occasional run up to just over the ton it used just under 1/2 litre of oil.

On the return journey hampered by one day of 450 miles of heavy rain it arrived home without apparently using any oil.

As it now has over 3000 miles on the clock I suspect yours has a problem, if the rings weren't assembled properly in the first place(and here I'm assuming you mean the three part oil scraper ring) have they damaged the nikasil barrel liner ?

The kind of consumption you are talking about is out of order

Take it back to your dealer and demand a new engine, end off.

Then break the new engine in, by giving it plenty of revs.:thumb

Its a shame we dont have the 'Lemon Law' in the UK, as they do in the US.

If your using that much oil you must be belching out blue smoke, to the point where you wouldn't ride it. as no fucker would be able to see behind you!!
Is that happening?
Don't believe the glass window oil level. It can change daily!!:blast
Be careful your not just massively overfilling it based on the oil level window.

Mine was right on the limit, ie 1litre every 1000 miles, however since the 6000mile service and oil changed to fully synthetic (castrol power 1 racing) it doesn't seem to be using it at the same rate of knots. 3/4litre in 160 miles is way outside BMW's margin so definately a problem :(

Since the piston rings were put right :blagblah:blagblah, i have been down to Felixstowe and back, still used a bit of oil as I said. Been back to the dealers this morning (oil weeping from O ring under filler), spoke to the head mechanic.
He told me that it may be that they cleaned both piston heads as well, because whilst one had a good layer of carbon on it, the other was as clean as a whistle.
No blue smoke (i checked) but it did produce nice oily soot, which having been for a spin this morning, seems to be reducing. I am seriously hoping that it is now settling down again, but, can't fault the dealership at all, they have told me to go straight back if any further problems, have been in touch with BMW technical to seek advice before doing an work and are fully supportive, so i will watch and wait. To late now to change plans for the trip so, as I need to run in a new tyre, i will clock on some miles this week and hope she settles down.
I appreciate all the comments and advice coming up..........so what's the French for "1 ltr of the black stuff please sir'?:thumb:thumb
Happy ridings :beerjug:

I ran mine in using the occasional full throttle technique to put a heavy load on the rings but avoiding high revs. seems to have worked well as oil use is minimal. If you have one mucky piston and one clean then it's a bit of a hint as to which side the problem is.

Piston rings rotate by themselves regardless of where you assemble them unless they are of a pegged type. They could have screwed up the fitting of the oil control rings at the factory?

All that oil will have made your cat cough

Hope it's now sorted but if the consumption stays the same don't accept excuses from the dealer

out of interest what oil you using at the moment and what has the dealer recommended, assume its something fairly cheap given your usage!

I wish......oil is the synthetic as recommended by BMW cos of course they don't run em in on good old 20/50 anymore. So at £15 a pop, bloody expensive.

This is extremly excessive oil consumption, Ive had four 1200's none of them have used more than half a litre between 6000mile services.:D
I would be planting my foot deeply in the dealers shagpile, not moving, and insisting on it being sorted. If its under warranty then they get all work done and paid for by BMW, theres no need for them to be cagey or shy about sorting it.

Errrr.....at the risk of starting a hail storm of replies....

If I run nothing but synthetic in the beast ('10 GSA, 5000 miles, still burning 'a bit' of oil) surely nothing will wear in...ever....at all. Zero wear - so the problem will never go away?

Running good old fashioned mineral 20/50 or 10/40 etc enables a bit of wear to help get the inner gremlins rubbing together nicely? if I do that, do I run the risk of grinding clever parts into oblivion - and worse, invalidating a warranty? (just before I pour in anything horrid.....)
