my girl has had a double hip replacement but loves the gs and is fine on the back but i know a backrest would seriously help i dont need a top box ,does anyone know where i can get one or has anyone made one.

Seat back/top-boxes

The top box is the obvious answer because the few seat back-rests available are relatively expensive. I had a Givi (46L I think) on my last GS and although it made it a little diffult for my wife to climb on to the pillion, once there she was hapy and comfortable and did not budge around. She is more or less insisting on another Givi for the new 1200GS arriving in August - although it means another key and all that messing around with brackets! I wonder if the 'big' BMW topbox , as fitted on the 1200RT etc. would be the answer BUT I know that will be expensive;

thanks all..........going to try a top box first then because i know its easy to sell if i dont like it.....................anyone got one?

If you're going the top box route, one thing that may be of use is having a few inches of rope for her to steady herself as she gets on the back. Obviously you'll need a top box that has tie down points on it, or can have them added. Makes a big difference to my shoulder, and eronbak's ease of getting on the bike.

Top box

"having a few inches of rope for her to steady herself ".....is this a joke?

Back rest

That really is neat - BUT $365 + VAT works out at about 280€ which is MORE than I paid for a 46 L Givi box + backrest etc;

home made backrest

Hi I made a backrest from a one of these pregnancy lumbar support thingies I "borrowed" from a colleague after she gave birth. Now I collect them when "ladies" go on maternity leave. Provides excellent support due to the shape.

I bought a waterproof cover from the local fishing tackle shop and some heavy duty self adhesive "stick like sh1t" valcro straps from Homebase.

Easy to put on and remove. Wife is very happy!

I personally would not trust the vario top boxes to use as a back rest.I have had two top boxes and both came off of their own accord,yes correctly attached and had been for miles,now i have it pinned as well.As I recall there were threads/posts about it happening to others.

Would the box be the 1200gs plastic top box. There is a free up grade repair for this now.
