Pillion comfort

On our recent trek across the Netherlands and Germany to Czech and back, Mrs E was very unimpressed with the comfort of the pillion seat, on what should in theory be the most comfortable bike I've ever owned.

My suspicion is that the position of the pillion pegs, combined with the big panniers, means that her feet are too far forward to be able to take any weight off the seat.

Anybody got suggestions for things that might help?

I'm not sure whether the existing seat is standard or not, it's what it had on when I bought it … maybe a flatter pillion seat would help.

That doesn't look like a standard seat to me. Could be original re-covered. Sometimes when they re-cover, they add bits and take bits away. it looks like that extra humpy bit at the front could cause a problem though, it could be pushing her backwards. But It doesn't look like the panniers would get in the way, unless she has unusually big feet 😀

I have the comfort seat and its fine for my Mrs, and she's extra particular.

That's what I wondered, but she says that's not the problem.

She hasn't, but the back of her boots are against the panniers with just the instep on the peg. She can't move her feet back any further to get the ball of the foot on the peg, which would make it easier to shift her weight.

There are lowering kits available, these Wunderlich ones look like they sit slightly further forward as well as lower.

Might be worth a go, although I'm not sure that the pegs are too high; probably lower than any other bike she's been pillion on previously.

I was thinking more like they would allow her foot to clear the pannier.
