Pillion utility box

Looks good Mark. :thumb

I’ll stick with my Peli for now!:D

It’s taken shape nicely and I like the way the corners emulate the corners of the BMW ally cases. Well done for persevering Mr Hooton.

Also, and only IMHO, we could always use the pannier rail as purchase points for bungees? This would stop any opening of the lid of course but I feel that just a few bungee hoops on the lid would suffice for waterproofs etc and hopefully not make it look 'too fussy' or 'busy' or 'shite' (to quote Johnny Boxer)!

Agreed - the pillion grab handles also provide a good fastening point for bungee straps and offer the advantage that items larger than the box - soft bags perhaps? - can be fastened on more easily

One thought that I had is that on a long ride without a pillion it's sometimes good to be able to ease back in the seat a little to change position. Would the hard edge of your box prevent this do you think?

Thanks for the agreement on the bungee straps :thumb2 after a nights kip I think the majority would prefer no more `furniture` on the box whatsoever but I may still ship some brackets just in case any lads do want to drill and fit them.

The edge of the box, in the rear mounting position, is further back than the OEM pillion seat when fitted so IMHO I don`t think this will be a problem :bounce1

Just a quick thought Mark about keeping things flexible .

Is there enough clearance to still fit the OEM ally top box in case some bod wanted both on?

Yes there`s enough room fella tho I`m not sure about the standard GS and Vario box...............

Haha bless ya :) I need to nail the GSA one first - if I take too much on I go into melt down :) thanks for the offer

Well I know it's personal preference but I'm not liking the additional furniture on the lid.......

I can only sit and admire your patience and willingness to change things as more suggestions come in.

It’s just a shame you don’t own a KTM 1290 GT :D

I`ve never been that far up my own backside (close tho :) not to listen and try suggested stuff, it`s always enhanced my reputation with the lads (well mostly) - thanks for saying.

And sorry, I do`t have a KTM 12-thingy or I`d be happy to make something for it.

Mark, I had one of your plates to replace the pillion seat. The edges were very very sharp- is there anything you can do to soften the edges at all? Not a massive problem on the plate once it was fixed in place but it could be a problem with the box that is being accessed regularly.

Also, is the box as wide as the pillion seat and therefore sheds water off the sides of the bodywork rather than channelling it underneath?

I assume the sharp edges were a by product of the laser cutter?

It`s settled then - no furniture :bounce1

I`m gonna make 2 next week, one for the client (Billy) and one for spare/stock :thumb

Thanks again for all the input, I think it`s been worth it as it`s an improvement on the US one :bounce1

The chamfered corners look quite easy to get to, so what about a fastening point on each of those corners - not on the lid but the side section? Just a thought...

Yes the laser cutter can be 'surgical' at times however I do hand dress all edges to give them a softer edge - perhaps I didn't on yours? Send it back (I'll refund all postage) and I'll happily do it again/better if you wish?

Regarding the edges of the box I've fitted some c section rubber trim to take the 'sharp ness' out of the edge - the lid in leaving as it seems ok. As for where any water might go I have no idea - possibly swept off the back?

I think I'll leave that to individuals fella - it'll never be perfect for everyone (tho I suspect it's good enough for most and better (and cheaper) than the yank one on which it's based) however it can be drilled to suit whatever anyone may want to fit
