Pillion utility box

How's about a nice wicker basket? :D

Only joking, I think it's a sound idea. If you're going to the troubles of making it out of metal, whatrver lock you fit should make it properly secure.

Yup I agree - it's gonna be a key I think

Slam your brakes full on and see how far you slip backwards, its not much but plenty to brake your spine, if you hit something, just trying to help the OP with his design, so no idiot reason to try and wreck the thread. :blast

I think respect of the lock could you provide a hole that’s compatible with the Bmw barrel so that is could be keyed to the rest of the bike. I know that might be expensive but if you could use the hole for your own type of lock ( like a hinges bent U shape that goes out through hole and the user can afix a padlock ( combination type if necessary !)

Could you make the lock utilise the locking pin for the seat on the bike, so the lid would be the bit connected to the pin?

Advantages:
Can’t see any lock
No extra keys or locks with same or extra keys

Disadvantages
Might have a rod tube to load around
Sealing, although if the rod went into a tube that could be part of the solution

To help with angles the locking pin could be free to inserted afterwards, this could mean the looking pin has other uses such as incorporating a helmet lock.

Couple of obs from me -

Material - SS looks good, but will be scratched to buggery after the first outing - then will look cheap (like ally)

I'd have looked at some simple steel plate, and either painted with a HD paint or powdercoat, or as an alternative checkerplate

Hinge - on the short edge can become subject to a lot of rotational forces - X & Y axis -

I'd have gone for a hinge on the longer side and used either a piano hinge, or a couple of shorter ones -

Box lid - Checker plate - if you strap any thing to that it will slide around and mark the top.

Its a nice piece btw - but looks very form over function?

Hi fella, good idea but that expensive it just scuppers the idea, also the BMW locks do not lend themselves to the simple `tang` solution (i.e. a simple turn of the lock slips a tang under a flat to stop it from opening) as there`s no part of the BMW lock that easily allows a tang to be connected.

Hi fella brilliant idea in theory but too onerous & expensive to design and make I`m afraid, but thanks for your input.

The SS won`t scratch like you say fella, trust me, using brushed stainless gives a good hard wearing surface but I am thankful for your views.
Good idea with the checker plate but personally I`m not sure if it would look `good`, if the whole thing is powder coated it will be durable enough I think.
And yeah, it`s over engineered you are right but I intend to make a much more basic `box` (possibly as early as tomz)

That would be an excellent feature. Beware however - Al Jesse tried to go down that line and IIRC met with some kind of resistance from BMW (don't recall the detail, but his bags never did adopt BMW locks - which I think would have been a major draw). He's quite an approachable chap, so emailing him might pay dividends if you are considering doing this...

Thanks for that but no - if other good people can't do it I think I will also be on a hiding to nothing!

I’ve just put my coat on in case I need to dash off... it’s just a thought, but instead of making a box why not design a base plate with some sort of quick release mechanism, maybe even similar in operation to the alloy top box fixing system, but specifically for one of (the most suitable size - not sure which one that would be) these... https://peliproducts.co.uk/cases/pr...7qwTWfZmVRVtgbtVqVrC-wZ2RHO86pr8aAmGtEALw_wcB

Obviously, part of the quick release would become permanently attached to the base of the case, therefore the case would have to be adapted to accommodate it. I’m sure this would void the warranty offered by Peli, but the cases get such good reviews I can’t see that a specially designed and properly attached base plate fixed to its underside wouldn’t affect the integrity of it at all.

It’s only an idea and may not be viable, but just thought it might be worth consideration. Also... the Peli cases have that techy, rugged look about them, as if they’ve been designed to be bolted to an adventure bike.

...whilst balancing the need to undercut the competition with making a profit the ugly face of 'it'll do'capitalism appears - looks like it's beyond your capabilities to copy a product with the added benefit of design & fabrication brilliance :D :D

I agree about the peli boxes - they are good bits of kit and, as it happens, I`ve already made several base plates for them for the lads (including Nutty) for either the pillion plate or for the rack itself.

In the old garden shed making the next one to incorporate all the goodly suggestions........

Thankfully my garden shed has a half a million pound laser profiler in it........

The million dollar question. Is it likely to exceed £100 plus Vat ? That might change the material spec. It would be great to have a way of securing a soft bag to it.

If you can aim for that price point or less :D i will have one.
