'Pinking' sound at high revs

This is what I am experiencing in 4/5/6 gears. Get up to 4k revs and open the throttle hard, to overtake for instance, and the left cylinder pinks like mad.

I recently had it serviced and mentioned it to them and they said it was down to clearances and adjusted the tappets, but it's still there.

Also, I though BMW had stopped this emmission of blue smoke when starting after being left on side stand, mine still does it and it's only a year old.

Any comments please

Ketchup,

Could it be moisture in the petrol? Did BMW change the fuel filter? it may be small bubbles of air getting through at high revs?

Or if you buy a 1100 it may only do it in 4/5 gear, thereby reducing the problem by a third:D

it sounds like its weak on one side, which can only really point to the throttle bodies being out of synch.
Do a search for how to set them up on here or advrider.com

Ketchup,

Mine started to pink/miss/knock/stall when i put a K+N air filter in, I swapped the filters back to an original paper BM one and it made it better, I started using Shell Optimax petrol and got the throttle bodies syncronised and it went completely. If yours has just been serviced though it shouldn't be one of these causing it.:nenau I hope you can suss it out.:)

Hi All,
The reason why your engine could be pinging at high RPM is that it could be running lean, as the previous post noticed when fitting a K & N air filter which is less restrictive than the paper filter thus leaning off the mixture, On acceleration the O2 sensor does not controll the Air /fuel ration and the TPS voltage output determins the injector pulse cycle.
Two things you could try, turn the brass idle bypass screw in by half a turn, or increase the TPS voltage by .020mv at a time which will enrichen the AF ratio.
DO NOT adjust the throttle stop screws.:beerjug:

Thanks for the replies, I think that if I had an idea what you were talking about I could sort this out quite easily. I understand the K&N issue and mixture strengths etc, I sometimes wish it was just carbs and nothing else and I would be happy but voltage and whatever, I think CW's can have it back and sort it out.

What about the smoking of oil from the exhaust on startup, has this been sorted on later models or not?

Thanks again, Nick

Detonation, pnking, rattling......

If your bike is pushing out smoke on the same pot that the noise is coming from then you have an oil consumption problem.

There are a number of possible faults:

1 Valve stem oil seal seapage due to the actual seal being worn/torn or mis-seated (loose)

2 Piston ring wear, due to poor assembly at the factory or incorrect running in proceedure - did you say your prayers every night during running in to the Gods of hot metal?

3 You are using too thin an oil....unlikely but I mention it.

4 Check that the tube from the air box to the injector/throttle body is not loose...IMPORTANT.... inside each tube and around the throttle body is a rubber 'o'- ring this can be displaced by rough refitting and cause an air leak and then your pinking.

Hope this is of use to you.

Smoke on starting

Ketchup

My 11 month old also occasionaly "smokes" on startup when left on the side-stand. Never smokes when left on centre stand though.

Thanks for the comments, I took the bike to CW's on Saturday and they think it needs new cam chain tensioners. They won't book me in until the parts arrive even though the earliest will be end of September. Wally has hinted that it could be the rings but seems reluctant to investigate at this point.

I must admit I am not the happiest bunny, I really didn't expect this sort of crap from a Beemer with such low mileage (7.5k now). The pinking has got to the point that when going up over Polrlock hill I thought the crank was going to get out for a breather, the oil consumption is about 1litre per 1000 miles and the thing dies a death over 80!

I will wait to hear what is to be done and hope Wally finds the problem, will let you know.

Nick

Come on then...complain!

Ketchup, get on the phone to BMW UK and complain like mad. You have invested in their product and it is not fit for the purpose.

BMW should at least insist on seeing the bike straight away and sorting the problem out...bloody dam quick. Don't sit back and take the crap you are obviously receiving from your dealer, this is not what their customer service is for; it is to help you.

Good luck and be tactful in all your approaches to the dealer and BMW, note down everyone's name that you speak to and make notes to remind yourself what was said.

At 7500 miles the thing isn't fully bedded in so there is something fundamentally wrong with your bike. Was it performing badly from day one, if it was and you've told the dealer before about this fault then they shouldn't have let it get this far.

BMW have a reputation to keep so get in there and fight your corner.....Good luck..with a name such as your's you've definately got the 'bottle' (squeezy or otherwise).
