pitted 2 gear in 1100gs gearbox

gear shaft can be repaired, tricky but possible

on the other hand i bought a gearbox ine-bay, in a lov price, hoping to find inside a good second gear or ,by chance, the intermediate shaft in good condition

the other question about fixxing somehow the pitted areas still remains.
what did you find in your case? was it worth spending money and time over fixxing them?

I also broke my intermediate shaft on my 1100.

There are no good ways to repair the intermediate shaft because two of the gears on the shaft are crimped on by heat. And very near these gears you have plastic needle bearings that will melt if you heat the gears and the axle.

I was planning to make an axle in a stronger material and move the gears over to the new shaft. But I gave up that idea because it was too complicated and was more expensive then find a second hand shaft.

They are standard plastic (type) cased needle bearings, as used on the other shafts. Just fit new ones.

steptoe, even if only the 2 gear is pitted, do you think that it's proper to change the opossite gear of the output shaft?

so, if a man can stand the cost and there is a man who know the job, the project isn't impossible

But when you assembly everything again you need to crimp fit the gears in both ends of the axle. And it will be very easy to melt the plastic case of the bearing.

I think they use induction heating for this at the factory.

Have you ever changed any of the gears on an intermediate shaft successfully? It should be very interesting to know how you managed to crimp on the gears without damage the plastics.

I twisted off the shaft it self!

It can have something to do with Turbo torque!

Do you know if he use induction heating to remove and fit the gears to the axle?
It should also be interesting to know where to find new spare parts for the intermediate axle because BMW don't list them? Or do you take old parts from damaged axles?

Yes, they are the same for GS-RT and RS.

I can see in the pictures that your intermediate shaft comes from a M97 gearbox.
Note that the intermediate shaft from M94 gearboxes are not interchangeable to the ones in the M97.

So you need to look for parts from a M97 gearbox.

I found a complete intermediate axle on ebay for 110 EUR to my bike.
And I doubt that you will repair your old one cheaper than that.
Then you can forget all about the trouble we talked about earlier.

Don't forget to measure the axle and use the right shims when you put it back.
