Years ago, the pitting on my new to me 02 - 1150 was bad (it only had 12k on the clock) I spent many hours trying to get the forks looking half decent only to find out they all suffer the same and 10k miles commuting later they were back to just as bad as before. Just take your time rubbing down, trick is to try and keep the bike clean. Road grit / salt seems to eat into the forks very quickly.. They will come up better, but yet to see a GSA without a few fork marks.

How long would that take on a 14 year old bike that's never had nice bottom forks! Does that give the smooth finish I've seen a few bikes with?

Timogra is referring to the stanchions, the chromed legs. Not the sliders, which is what you're talking about.

I think there's a distinct possibility that folks are getting mixed up by the original posters badly worded question - forks are made of different parts, each part has it's own name.

We'll forget about the fork yolks as i'm sure these aren't what the OP had in mind.
I have asked for him to be more precise about what part in a previous post, but he hasn't responded.
The usual part to get pitted is the slider (the lower part). These can be rubbed down and sprayed with hammerite smooth silver and they'll look as good as new.
Sorry guys for my lack of detail in my original post . It is the stanchions that I have the problem with have thought of going down the hammerite route but thought I'd put it out there to see what other opinions you all might have . Thanks James
Still confused, The stanchions are the fixed chrome tubes. The sliders are the painted bottom sections that hold the wheel.
Hammerite will be fine. Fill with normal P38 or automotive paint filler, rub down and spray. Use Smoothrite (or Smooth Hammerite as it is now called). After a week to get really hard, cut transparent adhesive film to cover the front section and you wont get the problem again. Got the adhesive film from the pound shop. Enough for about 12 bikes.
