i have a 2001 gs1150 with 21k on the clock. my problem is the pivot pin on the left hand side, has stripped the thread from the swing arm. i have been told by the main dealer its a new swing arm but can my old one be repaired? can it be drilled, sleeved and the rethreaded?

what size thread is it
ime thinking you could possibly repair it with a heli coil kit

Several

Second hand swing arms on fleabay recently

Might be worth putting a wanted ad on here for one One of the guys may have one kicking around

Worth the £12 to subscribe for full facilities here

Ive no idea how an engineering insert would hold up Plenty of engineering companies round Southampton to try

Personally I would prefer the good second hand option

Try Steptoe for advice

I Have a Spare.

Hi magic man,
I have a spare swinging arm sitting in my garage. All threads are perfect and it's totally un-damaged. It's off my 2001 1150GS - I got a new bevel box some years ago and it came with a new swinging arm as well (came from a company that built trikes from new r1150r's) so i fitted it as well and kept the original. I may even have some good pins for either end if you need them?
Let me know if your interested & we can sort something out.

I"ve just replaced the pivot bearings on my 1150 and you def need heat on the pins to remove them as the lock tight will f..k up the threads, that left hand one is only tightened to 10NM ,hard to see how the threads would get damaged .

Don't Really Know!!

Hi Magic Man,
Not sure what it's worth - what about £50 + postage cost?? Are you needing any of the pins? - or are they just needing cleaned up with nail varnish remover to get rid of the Loctite?
As Spen mentioned above, you do have to use a bit of heat from a hot air gun to soften the Loctite. Also, more importantly, remove all traces of loctite from the pins & swinging arm threads on all 4 pins and don't use Loctite when re-fitting, when torqued up fully they don't move and it means they can be removed or adjusted easily in the future.
i'll dig out the swinging arm - let me know what you want to do - if you can do Papal gift i could get it posted today or tomorrow.

Ready to Go

Ok, I've dug out the swinging arm and checked it over.
It's got both the front pivot bearings still fitted - these are still excellent so it's ready to fit.
I've cleaned the threads of Loctite at the bevel pivot end and fitted a pair of pins complete with a locknut - all in as new condition.
It also has the cap screw & sliding bush fitted for the bottom shock absorber mounting.
I would think £20 for Parcelforce delivery.
So £50 for swinging arm with bearings + £10 for the pair of pins if required comes to a total of £80 including delivery.
Seems like a reasonable deal?
I can't PM you 'cos your not a forum sponsor - might be worth the £12 to join - you'll probably get your moneys worth out of it:rolleyes:

sounds a good deal ,the pivot bearings alone are £45 :clap

I had the same diagnosis - stripped thread on the swing arm but closer inspection and a new pin and locknut and it's fine. The threadlock was the problem - even after heating it, it was a bugger to get the pin out but I perservered and managed to clean it . The new pin is staying in place fine - without threadlock this time.
