Hi All,

I am going to eastern Europe in the middle of September, and would like some ideas on where to visit in Poland, Slovakia, and Czech Republic.

Are there any good campsites or are they generally of a lower standard than in the west. Also any tips on bike security if camping or in Hotels would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Andy :thumb

Two places worth seeing in Poland, both in the south so close to Czech Republic and Slovakia, are Zakopane in the Tatra mountains and Auschwitz. The former is incredibly beautiful scenery and visiting the town you would think you were in Switzerland. The latter isn't something you do for fun but you really should do it. I did and that means one more person in the world will make sure what happened there will never happen again.

What Cheesy said.......but the big impact for me was Buchenwald, the BIG camp a Km or two from the over-touristy (ffs!!!) and reconstructed Auscwitz....that was too fake (And I mean that......but it'd take to long to explain now) .

Buchenwald (aushwitz II) is a sobering place...and as CM said, not a fun place but definately a place you shouldn't miss.

I'd go on about it but it'd sound trite.

Krakow is a lovely city....an hour from the above, and we stayed in a hotel that let us park in a private courtyard.......it's dead cheap as well....

Don't forget to explore Vienna........surprisingly close and well worth a day or two.

Fekkit, you should dig out the reports from Greg's trip there last year...we wrote a few pages of stuff about the whole area ;)

Fanum,

Thanks for the info, I'm not too interested in Vienna, as I've been there on business eight times over the last two years, and going again tomorrow for a week..to be honest I'm sick of seeing the place. I'd be interested in reading Greg's report, can you suggest a suitable search keyword ?

Many Thanks for your help,
Andy :thumb

Andy.. here's a few pictures of the eastern bloc raid organised by Greg Masters last year... We went over in May and had no problems finding hotel accommodation 'on the hoof'.. pretty good on the whole too! would save you carrying camping gear.. we also had no problems with the bikes....but we avoided Prague....... The itinerary was... Berlin for a trip around BMW factory.. On to Zagan (Stalag Luft 111) Auschwitz/Birkenau (near Krakow) ride back through Czech republic to Colditz.. then home.. 8 days and roughly 2800 miles :thumb (Bill (Fanum) , Paul G and Lucy left us at Auschwitz and headed south.. sorry if I missed anyone)

Fanum,

I think that your GPS must have been playing up during your Poland trip.

Buchenwald KZ is in Weimar, Germany and is more than "a km or two" from Auschwitz. "Birkenau" is probably the camp that you are referring to.

Fanum, sorry if my last post reads a bit "smart arse-ish". It wasn't meant to...

If you are in Slovakia Between the 13th&18th September why not check out the International Six Days Enduro around Povaszka Bystrica See the worlds top enduro riders and its all FREE!

I’m Glad I saw this post I’m off to the Czech Republic next July for the International Four-Stroke Rally at Hranice, in the Czech Republic
http://www.four-stroke.cz/
and so far my plan is stop in Prague for a few days on the way to the rally then I hope to have at least a week more to see some of the area and was thinking of the High Tatra mountains so if any one has any info on Hotels in Prague or the tetras I would be interested
I normally camp when I go abroad but have been told its so cheap in the Czech Republic that we would be better of in Hotels is that right ?
Thanks for the help Chaps

Andy you off on your travels again!. You must have to many Holidays. Wasn't Garmisch far enough on the 1100.

I lived over in Poland for a few months. Really worth going to Krakow, a great place. Warsaw and Gdansk are worth a visit if you want to see amazing historic buildings and the best (read worst) in Soviet architecture.

it goes without saying that a trip to the death camps is a must. Auscwitz/Berchenau really brings home the atrocities that were committed and leaves you realising how lucky you are not to have lived through what happended there. Go on a beautiful sunny day and the juxtaposition is mind-blowing to say the least.

Also worth a trip is the "Wolfschanze" -the wolf's lair. Hitler set out a fortified base in eastern Poland near a town called Ketrzyn. Its hidden in the woods and has got the biggest re-inforced bunkers I've ever seen.

Enjoy the beer, which is fabuluous and try golonka (pigs trotter) - its lovely!

Like everybody else, I'd definately put Auscwitz down for a visit to tour the museum then Berchenau to see the scale of the thing. It'll change your views on things, thats definite.

Krakow was my favourite 'nice' place to visit...although it did piss it down all the time I was there.

Al,
Good to hear from you mate !! Yeah I'm off on my travels again, ferry is booked for 18th September, I'm planning on riding to Munich from Rotterdam in one go, you would have thought I'd have learnt my lesson after Garmisch. A sargent seat is on order, so hopefully it will arrive before I go. When's the baby due ?
Keep in touch,

Salt mines south of Krakow, at Wieliczka, are a good way to spend a couple of hours. Krakow itself is nice as others have said.

Bratislava is okay but I'd only visit again if passing by, photos here:

Hungary & Budapest are only a few hours from B/slava. Budapest is definitely worth a visit:
