Wandered into my local Bm dealer to have a look at an M1000Xr, a bit OTT for me

They had a couple of plain white 1300GS which caught my eye, and I’ve seen them for sale at what I think is reasonable money

Does anyone own a no-option bog standard one and regret not getting some of the options?

I bought a bog standard 1250 RS and only put heated grips on it. I’ve had most of the toys on previous bikes and can’t really say I miss any of them.

I’d be intrigued to ride an ESA equipped RS to compare it with my manually adjustable rear shock ( front is non-adjustable) but other than that I’ve no regrets.

I had a bog stock one for 3 days when they had my RT in for the recent recall

IMO the stock suspension is truly awful (n)

I have the plain white ‘version’.
It has esa, quickshifter, heated grips, standard cruise control, manual screen, adjustable damping….all of the things I will/would use. ABS, traction control etc are ‘tuneable’ in the Dynamic pro mode. So wheelies happen, full fat power etc. Nice, the bike feels so lively compared to previous versions.
I think these are all you need.

I didnt want/need/ or desire to pay for ride height adjustment, adaptive cruise, electric screen, powered pannier mounts, crash bars, etc etc.

Am I happy? 100% correct choice for me. Love it.

Btw, my car has adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance. I really wish it had simple cruise control instead. My car has braked many times unnecessarily almost causing someone to run in the back on at least one occasion. I certainly would not want a motorcycle that brakes or slows down of its own accord ! I want to ‘ride it’ and not the other way around. Its not a bloody self driving Tesla.

I think it depends on your riding and how busy roads are - imo adaptive cruise is brilliant and works absolutely perfectly with no issues.

why would I want a cruise system that is a fixed speed when I can let the bike take up the slack such as on the tedious miles of uk 50mph roadworks where the car in front is doing 52mph, then 51, then 50, back to 51, 48 etc etc. Set cruise, and thats it, not set cruise, brake, set it again, brake.

Saves energy for when you get to the good bits, and saves faff repeat pressing buttons, braking, accelerating, on slower camera limits. If our roads weren't littered with speed limits and cameras then might be less of a bonus, so perhaps different where you ride.

It may well depend on how busy the roads are.
If people are unable to keep a constant speed, then I would normally pull out and pass them. If they then want to speed up again, after they have slowed down and I am in front doing a fixed speed. Then that is their issue tbh. If roads are really busy I would not be using adaptive anyway ( I have it in the car so am used to it..)
Another feature I do not like with adaptive cruise is the constant application of the brakes. Cant be good for wear and nothing worse than following a vehicle with constantly flashing brake lights. Tesla seem to be especially bad for this.

My motorway riding is kept to an absolute minimum though and can see why some people may like the feature. Just not me.

You can just switch the cruise control off when you want to ‘ride it’, then it won’t brake or slow down on it’s own accord. It’s one bit of tech that I actually like.

I suspect it works differently on a boxer engine with engine braking, I know it very rarely applies the brakes on my KTM.

i haven't personally noticed it ‘braking’ based on how I use it, its very minor fluctuations in speed that it deals with well. If a lot of vehicles were darting in and out of lanes i probably wouldn't be using it then. Suspect the bike will in the main avoid braking and adjust the speed by dropping off on the throttle, as braking is not fuel efficient.

Personal preference but I have found it useful.

I actually bought mine BECAUSE it had all the bells & whistles.

If I wanted a simpler bike, would have stuck with my 2021 gsa that was perfectly good - or even get a lightly used 10 year old one.

Simple certainly has an attraction.

Morning, the ESA is excellent and an improvement over the standard 1300GS (I've owned both). adaptive cruise I could live without.

There is an issue with the ESA system in that if the battery voltage drops it will not work until the bike is switched off and on again.

Personally I'd go for a TE without any further options.

All this debate about tech. Strikes me it’s less about good or bad, more just horses for courses, or just how you feel on the day.

I’ve got a full-loaded Multistrada V4 Rally. It’s got everything on it apart from any kind of auto box - though the QS is top-notch. I absolutely love it.

I also have 2018 Urban GS that has nothing other than bog-standard ABS - no electronic suspension, no modes, no traction control, no cornering brakes, no radar, no cruise control, no quick-shifter, no rev counter, no gear indicator, no fuel gauge. You even have to start it with a quaint old thing called a key. I absolutely love it.

I test rode a TE with adaptive cruise and adjustable ride height, don't need the adjustable ride height as I am nearly 6ft and don't really need / want blind spot detection or adaptive cruise. I found the front collision avoidance confusing and annoying, you don't want something flashing at you while you are about to make an overtake.

The electric screen is something I use a lot, weather protection is so much better than the old bike and its nice to lower the screen quickly. Spot lights are worth having I reckon as well if you ride in traffic. Note that with the TE I think you also get the additional wind deflectors and hardguards which really work.

The posh suspension is very nice, haven't ridden on basic suspension though, I can live without the centre stand etc.

For me by the time I had got the basic bike to the spec I wanted, it was basically the same price as the TE.

That sounds like the bike has an issue. My wife and I have done nearly 5k miles both of ours since December and never had either of them activate it.

I agree with the above - never had it activate in a several thousand miles of very varied riding.

I dont recall seeing it flash red more than once in 18 months, looks like it is a setting I cant remember changing it maybe I did when I first got the bike , this bike at the dealers seems to be on medium distance, and you can switch off braking.
