Hi All,

I just posted this:

http://www.crypticide.com/dropsafe/articles/bikes/post20041202232633.html

...on my blog - a draft route to get up to the northernmost tip of Norway and orbit the Baltic peninsula.

I'd appreciate suggestions of any must-see places and must-do things, if any other readers are familiar with the area.

Thanks everso! :)

Have a look here at some photos of Dutchmans ill-fated tour... http://www.bmwridersscotland.com/GalleryFour.htm

This was the proposed route.... http://www.bmwridersscotland.com/Events.htm#Norway2004

Thanks! Erm... "ill-fated"?

I would`nt bother with Oslo myself..from Stavanger I`d go North on the 13 over the Hardangerfjiord following the 13 all the way to Vangsnes where I`d take the ferry over to Hella then take the 55 over the Sognefjell to Otta.
I took the E6 all the way North from there but I wished I`d spent a bit more time to run up the coast near the Lofoten islands and less time in Sweden.
The run across from Stockholm to Goteborg is very pleasant and Copenhagen is a great place but the run down through Denmark and North Germany can be a bit flat and boring. Once I got to Flensberg I`d run down the North Sea coast it cant be less interesting.

You need to be a bit carefull if you head down the east side of Finland at those latitudes as petrol stations can be a bit few & far between

Hi Alec,

What a coincidence. I am just starting to plan a trip to Norway this summer (July).

I was stationed in Norway with the Army in Voss years ago.

I saw Gordon Fellows article in Ride mmagazine in 2002 and he did the same trip, he e-mailed me some useful pointers.

I am in Windsor, not far from Fleet. Maybe we can swop some info?

Cheers for now,

Dave

I'd leave out Oslo - pointless detour... From Stavanger, stick to the coast road and the little ferries - they do run to the timetable - all the way to Trondheim. Those roads were not fast when I did it years ago, but great fun.

On the way up to Trondheim, Alesund is good and Molde has an international Jazz fest mid July if you want to delay your journey a little bit - likely to be warmer! My experience of the June period is that up the mountain passes there is likely to be snow around, though the roads should be clear.

If you want an inland detour (avoiding Trondheim!), Roros is a world heritage site. We liked it.

Don't know much about anything north of that.

On the way back, I'd be inclined to go north from Goteborg. The coast there is great too. Skirt round Oslo, then back out of Stavanger to Newcastle. The roads back to Reading from up there are just as interesting as those across north Germany and the low countries... Plus you don't have to drag back across the south of England and the gloriously fun (not) M25...

I did a similar trip this summer, Alec.
Just booked the Ferry and two nights in St Petersburg.
No bike problems, new tyres and Ultraseal!!, plenty of cabins (huts) along the way(£25/30 per night). Credit cards accepted everywhere. Petrol good quality but roads poor in places. I would suggest sticking to the speed limits if possible. Email Embassies for info (they will send maps etc) and trawl the web for camp sites.

Newcastle to Bergen and three or four days up the coast but regret no visiting the Lofoten islands.

Onto Nord Kapp for a few days and an interesting ride down through Finland taking in the lakes and into Helsinki,

Then the ferry to Tallinn, a surprisingly beautiful city.

I took a bus to St Petersburg and after a few days I returned to Tallinn and my safe bike!!

Then Riga, Kaunas, Warsaw and Prague

Big Sylvia

Welcome to the madhouse Alex.........

Nice to see Big Sylvia looked after you on your epic journey.....recently checked out your website........fabulous images!! Nice to see her in the hotel foyer!

(For those that don't know, Alex was In Norway at the same time as us in July.......about two days ahead of us on the road.......comparing notes via text all the way.......!)

Next time you go rideabout Alex, we'll come with you!!

Big Sylvia

Dutchman, Big Sylvia is nice and cosy in her winter retreat. Too much salt interfering with her shiney bits.

Like me you can certainly vouch for the absolute delights of Norway, good roads, breathtaking scenery and friendly people. A tad expensive though, but well worth the trip. Being solo I just stopped when I wanted and always found a place to stay and most people spoke some english and were very helpful.

Alec can have a look at Jeff Munn's trip to NordKapp and beyond here:

Scandinavian Midsummer Madness

and say hello to my mate Aidan who has finally got his GS

I finally got one !!...........

Have a good christmas Dutch and regards to Gina and that Cool guy.

I'll have Aidan over in the spring for a taste of those excellent Scotch roads.

Regards

Alex
