Is there ANY degree play at the rear wheel which is acceptable? I have a very slight but nevertheless detectable movement. Doesn't cease when rear brake applied.
Depends who you ask but I've 1mm of play and will not be doing anything until it gets worse. I've been told that's ok due to big bearing clearance tolerance but others say my bearing is in danger of collapse. Seems to depend upon whether or not the person I'm asking has a chance of making money off me or not.
I've a spare bearing and relevant seals, so common wisdom suggests that I can now ride round the world without problems.
As always with distance diagnostics, more details required. Has it always had this play, last date/mileage measured etc.
My 1150 went (sold) at 33k, no sign of movement in the rear.

And where is the play? Is it when wheel is rocked with hands at 15.15 or with hands at 18.00? One position checks the para lever bearings (think its 15.15) the other the final drive bearing....
I could be talking rubbish though which would not be unusual.....
I would tighten up your paralever bearings and play will probably be gone. You'll find the nm or ft/lb requirements for the bolts in order to tighten them back up.
Task (stolen from steptoe post with a few additions)
30mm socket on an extension bar, through the spokes, undo the lock nut. May need (probably will need) a heat gun to break the lock tite applied in factory. You won't need to re apply it.
Adjust the pivot with a 12mm allen key, on an extention bar - re-tighten the locknut to torque value - 5 minute job
If in doubt copy this into google paralever bearing 1150 GS steptoe site.com and search until you find what you are looking for. The torque values are high on the lock nut...not the titanium bolt thing... tight tighten it clockwise a few degs. google to find correct torque setting or just make it fecking tight.
Or for the best service... look up gsshop.biz and get it done for you fast and cheap by the best man to do the job.

If it DOESN'T cease with the rear brake applied then it points towards the paralever bearings... You can tighten them, but the play is either a worn pivot which is not desperate in itself or notchy paralever bearings which will only get worse... If you remove the rear wheel and disconnect the parallel bar then move the FD through its arc you will easily feel notchiness... If they are notchy then it will affect your handling as well...
Thanks for replies all. All paraleaver adjustment is used up - can't tighten any further. Still a slight movement, so unless a slight bit of play is normal/acceptable, maybe it's new bearings will have it looked at by someone knowledgeable soon...

The torque setting for the adjustable pivot is quite low at sub 10Nm so they shouldn't be too tight... My present 11 has a little play even with new bearings and one new pivot... The main thing is that the FD moves smoothly and is not too tight or notchy...
FYI. The last person to tighten the bearing was Mr Steptoe himself. He confirmed that there was no play at all when he had done this (about 3 weeks ago). Therefore the little bit of play has arisen since then, so bearings must be deteriorating...
