hi guys, can anyone tell me how much play you should have in the rear wheel? if i hold the the wheel at 12 and 6 oclock you can feel a small amount of movement, there are no leaks or strange noises from the fd, is this normal?

play in wheel

well there is deffo more play than that, does that mean i am into a big money repair?

play in wheel

spoke to roy at RGM today looks like i can add my name to the FD failure list, it needs a rebuild.

How old is the bike? if pre '07 then check the needle roller in the FD pivot first! see my previous post on this subject!

If the bike is not long out of warranty, and has full service history, it's well worth asking your BMW dealership about what they can do for you. BMW paid towards my repair, and then give a 2 year warranty on fixed FD.

I have just gone through this. I have an 07 GS. My first FD was replaced at 18K due to corrosion. Then about 3 weeks ago just before MOT noticed some play in the rear wheel so took it to Vines (SLM) to get checked. I ended up getting a taxi home.

Bike was 2 years out of warranty but because 2nd FD had only done 15K, got goodwill from BMW so had to pay 20% of part cost (£800 + VAT ) plus fitting (1.5 hrs) So came out with a bill for £327. But got another 2 years on the FD.

So, a replacement FD = a years extened warranty.

play

mines a 55 plate with 60k on the clock so i suppose it lasted quite well really, roy thinks he can rebuild it and if i am lucky it will only need a set of bearings(£150) so i could be worse.
