Playing Little Big Planet quite happily last night
Closed down the system
Turned it on today - and it will not boot up either PS3 games or Blu-ray discs ...
Any idea what is wrong!!?

I can get into the initial screen - but it wont seem to drive the disc

Any suggestions, as own for about 5 months and used about 6 times

Is it plugged in with a HDMI cable? If it is then change that for a RCA cable and hold the power button down for 8-10 seconds. This resets it and the screen resolution. Also try a disc that you know works, not LBP. HAve you got the latest software update?

Ok - but why would the HDMI make any differnce to the disc booting up?
I get the start up menu ....
I have re-set the box about 5 times (and it automatically returns screen resolution back to non HD) ... it makes no difference. You can so it from the system menu and return it to factory settings. This doesn't help

I have been using discs I know to work - including blu-ray ones ... and it won't boot these, either!

Yes, I have updated the software ....

Thanks

Didn't see your comment about being able to see the menu, hence the suggestion of the RCA cable.

Do you have the litle circle in the top right hand corner of the screen when you try and load a disc?

Can you hear the disc spin or not?

The little circle appears ...
The disc doesn't spin up

Does than mean anything?

At least yours lasted longer than mine. Bought the GT5 pack and a couple of games from Curry's. Took it home and set it all up and I got the menu up. It wouldn't play any discs.

I used a memory stick to get an update off the internet in case it was that.

I repacked it and took it to my Nephew who knows a thing or two about what they do. He said it might need a format, so he did that and it still didn't work.

The following day I took it back. Rather stupidly I was told that I couldn't have a replacement unit as the ones in stock were not the GT package... which was simply a sleeve over a standard box which had been opened and a copy of GT5 put in the box

It's put me right off so I haven't bothered getting a replacement.

I would get onto the Sony Helpline and get it replaced. There are a couple of things that could be wrong, the disc drive has malfunctioned (most likely scenario) or laser has melted it's holder and therefore can't read the disc. A re-format of the HDD is unlikely to help.

By the way, the return rate on PS3's is very low and SOny's helpline has a very good reputation so I would persist with it.

Actually, got through to the UK helpline today, after a variety of horror stories about slow pick up, hanging on waiting etc...
They offered to pick it up via courier ... until they found out I was in CH.

They gave me the CH helpline, so it gets sent there tomorrow for repair or replace . Which is great as it means it saves on a lot of hassle in getting it back to the UK. But it is a European warranty valid anywhere - and with Sony not with Currys.

I phoned Currys and they were not interested in get involve at all. I thought the warrenty was always with the shop you purcahsed from??

Hmmm, re failure rate - knackered disc drives and lasers seem very (very, very) common.
Despite the protestations of the help centre :augie

But they were very good and helpful - both here and in the UK

Sony are very good wth the PS3 and PSP, unlike some helplines.

I can tell you for definate that the failure rate is very low as a percentage, certainly nowhere near Xbox standards, but both machines, and especially the PS3, are complex devices and will have some attrition obviously.

Not many machines can be a hardrive, games machine, TV tuner, web browser, Blu-Ray and DVD player, music server, video library and picture bank etc, etc and not suffer.

When you get it back you should also try PlayTV (I take it you recieve free to air channels in CH?

By the way I don't work for Sony or Microsoft..:)
