Hi,
My bike is a 2005 1200gs.

The problem is :
I was riding along after 100 miles, suddenly without using the brakes my red triangle appeared and also brake failure flashing fast.
The brakes seemed ok so I carried on. A few more miles and I then realised my brakes had actually failed. Very little left.

After a bit off ignition on & off and waiting 10 minutes, the brake light went off and all seemed ok. About another 20 miles, the light came back on and no brakes.

Same again, messed about and waited, all ok.
Set off again, this time turning the abs off using the abs button, 15 miles and it fails again.
Again I had very little brakes but sometimes even though the light were still flashing the brakes would work.

Please help.

I've had this.
Turn the bike off and let the can bus power down.
Important !!! Check your front brake lever is not touching you're hand guard, if it is this will prevent the safety system from self checking and if this is the case the ABS system and servo will not work.

Is the speedo playing up as well? Common for rear abs/ speedo sender to pack up. Had the same happen to me.

Hi,

Thanks for the replys so far.

I've checked switches and all seem to be ok.

The speedo is ok.

No other problems other than the ones mentioned.

Hi,

Ok after checking all the switches which were good and also the rear tail light ( which surprisingly was like brand new ). This bike has 36k on the clock but has been really looked after by the previous owner.

The only thing so far in all my inspections is that the negative battery terminal was loose, not really loose but you could move it by hand. Maybe this but doubtful.

I'm going to remove the tank today and check wiring loom.

Just go get the fault codes read it will tell you what location is an issue and if you're lucky pinpoint the fault exactly

Much more economical than taking your bike to bits whilst not really knowing what you are looking for!

Brake switch adjustment is a possibility but getting the code read is a better indicator

Hi,
I have ordered a gs 911 and waiting for it to arrive. To be honest it is an excuse to get to know the bike as I have been lacking a bit off confidence in stripping this machine.

Anyway, I set to today, complete strip down.
My findings were :
1 : Iron filings on the rear abs sensor, cleaned & re fit - but wondering now, does this mean I have rear drive problems or are a few filings normal over time.

2 : Somebody has obviously had the ABS plug off at some time and broken the securing clip, now I wasn't 100% sure if the plug had moved but I certainly made sure it was plugged in properly.

That's about it really. I found a corroded plug on the left side off the bike. I'm not sure what this is for but I cleaned it up and then put a cover over it. The plug had yellow & blue wires. I will investigate the wiring diagrams.

Residual braking on my bike if the servo fails to work is absolutely scary poor. I think the braking system on this bike was really poorly thought out to be honest, when these events occur you could be barrelling along at hell of rate only to find when you need the brakes eekkkk they aint there! It is weird but since I bought my bike I have had many occurrences of the ABS light flashing BUT, touch wood, I have always found that the system rights itself after switching off and restarting ?? one way or another I do not have great faith in the system and that is bad you have to be able to go out on the bike confident the brakes are going to work properly its not a lot to ask of a bike costing as much as a GS does... is it?

My fault code readings were,

24971 pressure in front wheel circuit to high - not present at the moment.

24951 abs motor rear defective - not present now.
