We all know there’s a problem, we all know how to fix it, so, why don’t we all just do that?
Crusade is an honourable thing, but utterly pointless……… You want an official letter of apology and some flowers from BMW ? Not going to happen. You want to ride’n be happy? Just fix the bloody thing. Take it out, clean it, use some ACF, bit of bathroom sealant, stick it back, ride, enjoy. I’m not here to criticise anyone, but hey, I was 16 two days ago, I’m 44 today and I’ll be 70 tomorrow. Then I’d be able to spend countless hours on the net, crusading, rallying, sending letters, petitions and making everybody paranoid.
Now, I’d rather spend all this time riding. And if there’s a problem (and by the way – ALL bikes have problems), I’ll go to UKGSER, look for the solution and fix it.
So.
I’m NOT GOING TO HAVE A 1200GS FPS FAILURE.
Anyone else?

Brilliant Post :aidan

I, 100% agree, it is a (albeit brilliant) machine - the forth GS I have had, none have had any significant issues despite the amount of use they get. If they do get a fault, I fix them - end of!

So ..... No , Repeat after me "I am NOT GOING TO HAVE A 1200 GS FPS FAILURE" :thumb:thumb

Do you mean FPC? Fuel pump controller?

I'll try my best not to have a failure, but being a pedant I'd like to point out that its impossible to know if an event is not going to happen in the future, short of selling the bike. In either case (I sell the bike, or have an unexpected failure) I couldn't sign up. I can only safely comment on my past experience, and so far... No failures.

Yours pedantically.

A splendid rant which I hope was therapeutic and beneficial, however the logic of your argument appears to be that people should accept any old rubbish from manufacturers and repair it themselves. Clearly not in the spirit of product improvement and what we loosely term technological progress.

I do admire your faith though.:augie

Ogmios - don't have a clue what IBF is - I'm "forin", you see.
I wear a jacket with big red hammer'n sickle (just to annoy my Polish comrades), so, if you see me, shout "TOVARISH !!!!!" and buy me a coffee.
Gismo - my logic is based on this:
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

In most of the cases it's quicker/easier/less stressful to do things by yerself'n
reserve da venom for those bloody foreigners cluttering da Red Cow land.
IMHO of course.

Me neither, bought new one and on CW's advice, popped it in and carry the old as a spare:D

Moaning about BMW won't get me home in the middle of nowhere, besides, they fixed the other problems nicely:thumb2

Sorry Kesha, I was being pedantic too. :)

My FPC went. I was in the back of beyond. I got a mate to come and fetch me with a trailer. Took the bike home. Ordered the part. Fitted it. Problem solved.

Knew it would happen one day. Its a GS after all. Will it happen again? One day probably:nenau When it does, I'll fix it again, c'est la vie, n'est pas ?

(This time I have a cable to keep the pump running and get me home - no trailer needed).

привет Товарищ,

To date my GS has had a final drive, both front discs, a front wheel, and a tank sender unit all replaced under warranty. All of this represents time in a workshop when I could have been driving and enjoying the machine but could not due to poor quality control of components. It will soon be in the workshop again for new seals to be fitted to the original luggage alloy cases(all leaking) and a new front engine cover (corroded), again under warranty ( less than 20k Km and garaged in a heated garage).Thankfully all occured within warranty and BMW to be fair continue to sort it out.
In comparison I had a VFR800 for 6 years and I sold it on last year(24,000 miles) with only a voltage regulator failing in the 6 years( a known problem that was fixed by an improved part).

Imagine if all the above repairs were at my own expense:eek:. There are issues with build quality of the GS1200/1200GSA ( a lot of them connected to poor quality control on externally sourced components). Purely as a reputable manufacturer BMW should be trying to engineer out the problems, in the long term its good for business.

When the warranty expires then its up to me to keep it rolling and I accept that, but it would be nice if BMW helped by at least supplying parts which are up to their stated purpose. Repeat failures of EWS antennas , FPCs etc in this day and age are not excusable. I work hard for my Euros, maybe its time for BMW to work harder as well at resolving the known problems.

As Audi say "Vorsprung durch Technik"

:beerjug:

And what about if you were 70 yesterday (in fact rather a lot of yesterdays) ? I did ride yesterday when it was -4°C but today it remained at -4°C and there was a light sprinkling of snow - so I reluctantly used the car.

I see this as part of servicing the bike. Remove FPC spring and autumn, clean it and coat it with ACF50. Takes about 20 minutes a year. So what's the problem?

I'm not going to have one cuz I don't know what an FPS is :drool
Well, friend. I'll make it easy for you.. ready ?
It's the FUEL......PUMP........TADA !!
Geddit ? No ? OK, I admit it. That was a mistake. My mistake. I meant FPC.
Us dumb Rysskies never learnt to write proper. I'm sorry. In writing.
Happy ?

Vaseline might also help, otherwise try sticking a condom on it.

The problem is that BMW has stated that it believes there is more than one reason for the failure. Which in any case is blindingly obvious, how otherwise would a guy with a GS with 650 miles on the clock in a dry part of the States have a failure?

But hey, good luck.
Tim
