PMR446 radios to an Autocom - Advice needed

I did the usual compulsive purchase today and got a Active- 7 - Smart thingy from Pidcocks for £200 ish (including the Streetpilot lead and phone adapter), wired it into the bike, destroyed my helmet liner and then went for a blast; Great...now what? billy no mates talking to his GPS? so I fancy rigging up the cheapo PMR radios to see how they work. Has anybody got any ideas for using cheap radios, I don't want to spend loads of money, hopefully, somebody has used these before.

Any PMR446 radio will work with another though you'll have to deal with the way your radio relates to the others (in between channels - DCSS?), but essentially no problem. And being a man of capable means you'll be able to knock up a lead to run between the two. If you don't fancy the hassle Doug Sant at Autocom will make up a lead for any radio (at a price ).

The lesser radios won't be up to the fit and forget capabilities of the rufty-tufty Kenwood TK3101 or Icom F22SR, but in your pocket or tank bag no probs.

Cheers for that Andy. We have just replaced our works 2 way radios with PMRs, we have all been issued with a pair and a 12 Volt charger (just the right size for the tank bag) to keep in the car and it seemed a shame just to use them for what they were intended for. I'll give Autocom a call.

the kenwood tk 3101 and the icom only talk to each other on channel 1 and 3 as ave got the kenwood and i have also gor the alan 456R that has all the codes available to talk to them both and is every bit as clear as them. dont go for the lesser 451

If the Kenwood and the Icoms are both PMR radios shouldn't they work together on all channels?

Our radios are Binatone 600s and cost less for a pair and charger than a battery for our old Motorolla pro radios. I know they work on the channels and subsets as the cheaper Motorolla PMRs because I've tried it 'on site'. If they work with the autocom I fancied pulling one apart on building it into the bike for ease of use.

I must say that I've been most impressed with my pair of 456Rs value-for-money-wise and although I've not yet tried it, I've checked with Autocom that their "Icom"-compatible lead works just fine.

Will likely be going with the Pro-7 setup for portability, meself.

Had a FANTASTIC morning using my Icom F22SR on a SPC ride out, at lunch 1.00 swiched it back on Battery was Dead NOTHING, so that 3/4 hours on a battery at full volume.

Can it be wired into the bike nicely OR I need two more batterys ?

Unsurprisingly its another lead from Autocom, or at least it would be if you had the Pro7 Sport or Pro M1, I think you need to ask Autocom what the options are with the Active 7 Smart

I´m now using Autocom ProM1 and TX-446 and the performance of this radio is simply fantastic. This new radio replaced my older Motorola TA200 and it´s simply different league...

Works with universal Autocom TX lead. Only issue is, how to bike-power this radio as even with NiMh battery is pain to use it for only few hours and then wait for home to charge it.

Just spent more money on AUTOCRAP £350, Pro 7 on mine so I can talk to the wife on a ride.

now Have a AUTOCOM Icom that doesn`t work with the one I have just purchaced from Crystale radio.

When I was looking at all this music/bike-to-bike stuff, the resounding message was 'whatever you buy now, you'll buy Autocom later' - so I bought Autocom first.

Yeah, sure, it's expensive - but it does work. I have rider-to-pillion, radio, MP3, bike-to-bike, GPS and mobile phone all feeding into an Autocom Pro-7 audio hub. The Kenwood 3101 and the Autocom unit are bike powered and it's been pretty much fit and forget.

The only problems have been from other riders who have set their VOX too low and end up on permanent 'transmit' (I'll let others judge who that might have been) and a suspect cable from a dodgy early 7-pin batch - replaced foc.

In-ear speakers complete the set and I've had more than one telephone conversation with the office at 100mph (without Tobinators!) whilst on the Continent (honest, Officer!)
