I have been searching for some time with no success , I seem to remember some time ago, that there was a section with numerous POI files for various destinations such as dealers, paradores, hotels etc. Has it been deleted, or can someone point me in the right direction - many thanks in advance.

On which satnav ?

Garmin in my case, but I thought the 'section' I remember, was a catch all for all POI's.

The whole thing became very out of date and very little (if anything at all) ever added to it. It was also a jumble of ‘stuff’ anything from some cafes to a hotel to a supposedly awesome road. It was therefore ‘retired’ some time ago. In a way it became similar to Garmin’s latest maps showing petrol stations which closed years ago and BMW having incorrect locations for dealerships.

The original thread had its origins way back in MapSource and well before Google and tools like Google Maps got going. Nowadays it is easy to find and pinpoint just about anywhere on the face of the Earth. Similarly, if anyone needs a precise location for something, it is easy to share it. Here is an example of a specific point on a road in Belgium using MyRoute:

Probably the only POI's that would be useful would be things that don't change or change slowly for example, CWGC graves and memorials, historic buildings, battlefields and natural wonders and viewpoints. There are a lot of resources for these type of things. I use the Irish and Northern Ireland historical monuments sites quite a bit most of the sites allow you to filter the info you need rather than taking a scattergun approach.

CWGC link moved to the Battlefields sub-section of Travel. Alpine passes file deleted as it’s already in the Alps sun-section of Travel.
