Poll: The position of your windshield

Hello!

I have recently changed my trusty 1200 GS Adventure (2006) to GS Rallye edition (2012). The new bike is better than the old one in almost every respect. However, the windshield of the standard GS has been a diasappointment:confused:. If the windshield is in the three highest positions I experience shaking of the head due to turbulent airflow. When it is in the two lowest positions the shaking is not an issue but I am very exposed to wind. During the first 5000 kms I have tried to find the best position and now it seems that the second lowest position is the best for me. I am 192 cm long and wear a Schubert C3 helmet.

Now I ask you: In which position do you keep your windshield?

I'm surprised you need the windshield at all if you're laying along the bike!
 
On my 2013 ADV I have the windshield in the highest (upright) position with a Touratech spoiler on it. Works fine for me.
 
Have you got the side winglets? My last GS (before it was squashed) had them and it was a very quiet ride. My new GS doesn't (yet) have winglets and I'm getting much more buffeting around my shoulders... it's a much noisier place to be.
 
Or fit Tobinators to let air flow beneath the screen and fill the low pressure area generated behind it.
 
There was a Nippy Norman High and Wide screen on my GS when I bought it, which was great. When I got a GSA with OEM screen I got more buffeting so put on another High and Wide (took a bit of modification to keep the adventure screen stabiliser bar) - great again - visor up at pretty much any speed is fine. Tobinators made no difference for me, but winglets did seem to help a lot.
 
Standard screens too thin wobble about my vario is much thicker the adjustable spoiler is great had one on a tiger in the past best get a good aftermarket screen same as the seat rubbish foam buy another lack of rear mudguard cos that's not standard :rolleyes: these are supposed to be touring bikes :confused:
 
No matter what position, it rattles. I keep it tipped up.


For those who believe, no explanation is necessary.

For those who do not, none will suffice
 
I have a Givi AF-330 with Tobinators. It's less noisy and causes less turbulence than standard GSA or the taller version by Wunderlich.

Thanks all for their responses. But I would like to go back to my original question: In what position do you keep your original BMW windshield? This may not be the most important question in the world of motorcycles but I find it interesting since a long fellow like me has two choices: First, to keep the windshield very low when the head is above turbulent airflow and second, to keep the windshield upright and try to lead the airflow over the helmet.
 
I have a gsa, I had my screen in the most up right position. It wasn't high enough so I cut the little nipples of on the adjustors to get more hight. Perfect for me now.

I had exactly the same issue with the headache inducing head buffeting - I fitted tobinators to the standard screen, have them set about halfway and have the screen laid back (down) as far as it'll go. The wind hits me in the upper part of the chest which I don't mind and the head buffeting is zero. Granted the wind noise is greater but I ride with earplugs anyway, my entire head is exposed to a constant flow of air so no vibrations/buffeting at all. I came to the GS from sports tourers and semi-naked bikes and the GS screen, even in the lowest position, still provides more protection than any sports tourer or semi-naked.

Also have the Givi Airflow for the winter months for a bit more protection, set up the same as above.
