Poor Starting

My 2003 GS 1150 eill not start from cold without constant winding with the throttle wide open.The only thing i can think of is that the oil temperature switch is faulty and not telling the brain to supply exess feul , has anyone had a similar problem or can offer any advise please as i am pulling my hair out which is thin anyway and i dont want a huge bill from the dealer

Is there any history that might be relevant - such as when was the bike last serviced and by whom? Has it been dropped prior to the problem appearing and does the bike run well when warm?

Have the throttle bodies been balanced recently?

Hi the bike has only done 6000 miles i brought it in November with only 1200 miles on the clock ,the bile is fine when warm ,starts and runs with no problems when hot,the bike has not been dropped is in good nick , idid have the same problem about 2000 miles ago for about a week but it cleared itself,i have put a new battery on just to be sure so that is ok and it wins away for england it just wont sart, there is a slight popping sound as if it is popping back through the air intake just before it actualy does catch

Check the seating of your offside throttle cable where it goes into the TB.

I think the temperature is read from a sensor in the lid of the airfilter.
Best way to start the bike is to put the fast-idle full up, and press the button. Opening the throttle increases the cranking load. I have to resist the urge to crack the throttle, old habit.
Does the bike run properly when started?
Are the fast-idle cables doing their job?
Has any work been done on the bike lately?

Hi thanks for the reply,the air filter sensor reads the air temperature ,i think the oil temp sender is more likely to afect the cold start as it reads the temp the engine is running at,i appreciate the best way to start is choke on and no throttle but it just wont start and normaly it starts ok without touching the throttle,the bike runs fine when hot and all the cables are working and set ok, the only work done recently is oil and plugs and crash bars but have done 700 miles since without problem ,thanks for your input

I have the same problem on my r1100. I have discounted the oil temp sensor because the oil temp guage works fine. I am assuming that the same sender unit would be used for the guage as the engine management system. all cables are seated properly , the throttles are balanced, it has been down the road on its side once or twice though.
