Went over to Anglesey today to watch my freind racing his classic Honda. For some reason the GS has developed a huge backfire upon closing the thottle. Now I've always had the odd pop and bang but the beast is sounding like it should be strapped to the front of a challenger tank. When I got home I covered the end of the exhaust and it didn't seem to be blowing out of anywhere (but at the same time it didn't stop the engine which I assume means it must be  ). Will doing the valve clearances make any difference. Sure they are due to be done. :thumb

It`s most likely an airleak mate....double check the exhaust all around, and also check all the inlet clamps for tightness.

What exhaust are you running? My 1150 does the same. Not a few pops and parps but full on shot gun jump out yer skin BANG! I sealed the join between Y piece and can to no effect. This weekend I've gone back to a CAT ( kindly donated by another Tosser :thumb ) with no can. Will see if that cures it today :)

I'm running a Y peice with a standard can on it. Sounds like what you've got Atkule. It's monster monster!!!! Thankfully I had my tunes playin, otherwise I may well have headed for the hedge fearing a terrorist attack
I'll strip the exhaust down and try resealing with exhaust paste :thumb

Mine's always done it in the 2 years + I've owned it. Y-piece and standard can. On a recent tour in Europe one guy who'd been folowing me said he was going to get some stick-on bullet holes to put on the front of his bike. :)

Throttling

I have a remus y piece and standard exhaust.. mine pops occasionally when riding at moderate speeds, but if I push on a bit and up the revs a lot, it usually cracks and pops more, when the throttle is rolled off..
Sometimes these can be pretty loud, especially in sunken welsh lane with stone walls on either side..

But it sounds like yours is much worse that what mine does on occasion..

With a Y piece they all bang a bit.Could be that the TPS is a bit out or the TB balance as it has just started happening.Might be worth checking the Cat Code relay.Tarka has already suggested there may be inlet leaks.Worth a check/tighten.

i tried stopping the pops & bangs on my 1150: Y piece, remus revolution & BB chip.

balanced TBs, adjusted TPS throughout the range, took the entire system off 4 times and resealead. never made any difference at all :(

I have gone down this route . Seems to work a treat, I now have a K&N filter with this setup up, it sounds jolly good and it goes better. Quicker acceleration :thumb
I will have to put the can back on if I go fording though. Glug glug glug :D

There's always one - and it's me. Y with sensor and std pipe, Steptoe catplug mod, K&N filter - never a pop ever, even on radical throttle roll-offs. :thumb
