Portable Fridge/Freezer 12v/24v

Thank you.

I only asked in as much as the advice in the thread was to have an external transformer, which lead me to think there was a better alternative, possibly not from Haford’s.

However, if the Halford’s unit is a steal, it maybe solves itself.

It does come with an external transformer, it’s also quite compact so that’s a bonus too. Nothing worse than a transformer that’s larger than the fridge! 😂

What a result, I expected the requirement to purchase the 240V AC power brick separately for £15, but if the unit comes with one for £202.50 that's even better value. :thumb2

As I said earlier, a 40 litre compressor fridge/freezer box for around £200 with a three year warranty is an absolute steal.

If I didn't already have more than enough fridges I would go out and buy myself one. its the kind of thing that lends itself to lots of uses from travel, camping and events through to barbecues and a backup when defrosting your house fridge, especially useful in hot weather.

I haven’t plugged mine in yet as the instructions state to leave it for 12 hours initially on a level surface to allow the coolant to settle before switching on. However in the meanwhile I’m just charging up my camcorder from the power bank to see how much it drains the unit. Lots of work to do at the ABR over the next few days. 👍IMG_1277.jpeg

We have one that looks identical to the photos of the Halfords one and you can set the temperature of the two compartments to whatever you want so if you want the large compartment to be full of frozen food for a weekend then set it accordingly or if it’s to be a beer fridge then move the temperature up to about 4c.

We’ve not had it long but it works well though unfortunately I’m not going to be home to check the brand until after the weekend.

Was going to get one but on checking I'm being told all sold out in all stores. Hopefully they might re stock at some point. I blame all this hot weather.

I got the last one from our local Halfords 👍

website says I can have one delivered this week or collect from Oswestry on Monday

Loads in London E1…. Or at least one.

You're correct, still some left in London and other places south.

Obviously the Halfords app didn't look very far under its "look further" option.

Should be able to get one on delivery.

Thanks all. 👍

Edit..... there's one in the Aberdeen store FFS, that's only 25 miles from me. Obviously "look further" just means the computer looked outside the local store door, and saw none 😂

Have you tried it yet ??

If you run it from your power bank, use 12V/24V DC if possible rather than 240V AC to save losing power through the unnecessary conversion, but you knew this already.

Settling time for compressor fridges after transportation is to allow the oil to return to the compressor casing from the pipework so they don't run dry (although most have an in-built oil separator within the compressor to keep the oil in place anyway).

With a portable fridge/coolbox, so long as you don't invert one they are robust and should be capable of withstanding a bit of handling by design.

Not to be confused with the popular myth of inverting a faulty fridge to get it to work (which only relates to ammonia absorbtion fridges anyway, not compressor fridges. Never do this to a compressor fridge, you have more chance of damaging it this way).

I’ll be plugging it into the mains later at home to get it chilled and then switching over to the 12v system in the van for the drive to the festival. 👍

Great stuff, enjoy the festival the weather looks superb. I hope your new cool box performs as well as intended. Let us know how you get on with it. :thumb2

I have taken a punt and bought the Halfords chiller / cold box thing, as recommended above. Too late for Le Mans sadly, but I’ll be giving it a go in September or earlier, if the sun reappears.

Was a real game changer at the festival over the weekend. Cold beers, chilled food and the ‘hum’,when running wasn’t nearly enough to wake/irritate me. Of unseen usefulness was the double hinge so it can be accessed from both sides, useful in a van. A very worthwhile addition

Ok I’ve recovered from the ABR gig and the Halfords fridge/freezer worked flawlessly as I expected.
£202 extremely well spent.
I had it set on 3 degrees which was perfect for keeping everything just at the right temperature. It will however go down to -22!
It’s a solid unit and appears very well made, I think the dual hinge on the lid is also a clever design. It has a clear LED menu display and some useful features.
I ran it from my DJI Power 1000 unit which is another device I was testing properly for the first time.
If anyone’s looking to purchase one of these Halfords fridges, I would strongly recommend this model. 👍
