I've been asked to look at getting a portable hdd for my grand-daughter who is going to Uni to study fashion photography and this is one of the things that she has to take with her.

Looking at all the mini ones and thinking this or that one looks good only to read the customer reviews and on all of them there seems to be a number of people that have had bad experiences and say do not buy

Surely there must be something out there (that's not horribly expensive) that will do the job :thumb

Can anybody recommend any drive or brand in particular???

Thanks in advance :thumb2

People rarely praise but always complain just look around in here. The one above isn't a bad deal at all.
Might be an idea to get her some online storage as well. For documents and stuff Google Drive can't be beaten and is unlimited if you stick to their format. You can export or send in word excel format if needed. All the editors are online as well although you can use them offline with chrome. Since it is photography a Flickr account would be good with a free 1TB of storage for photos. All free all private unless she chooses to share them. Well other than to the GCHQ and NSA!

Fashion Photography, so potentially, MASSES of space needed......and the fact that she HAS to have one implies that the expectation is for it to be taken back and forwards between wherever....digs, studio, PC faculty.

With that in mind, THIS could be spot on....in fact, the bit at the bottom where there's a case, a decent lead (no point in gaving USB3 with a crap lead) and the drive for under a hundred quid.

Transcend have a pretty good name in memory and discs, and a properly rugged one like that should take being hoiked around from place to place by a student :D
EDIT...it says it has a 3 yr limited warranty, so depending on the limitations, that could be useful :)

Amazing prices these days though......it was only a year ago I got a 1TB usb drive for the price of this 2tb one, and I got 20 quid off because the box was ferked.

i use a samsung 1TB bought used off here. about £50 new. it does what it should and seems to be the business.

I would go for a 1Tb drive and a big fat cloud account. Hardware has a nasty habit of going titsup just before a deadline.
Two 500 Gig drives could allow for backups but always keep master files in the cloud.
She's learning to be a professional so regular backups into the cloud are part of the job.

that's what my eldest does after learning the hard way

Agree with 1Tb drive with timed backup, plus cloud storage with auto-backup every day.

I use MyPCBackup, and can access all files via iPad/iPhone too

This here cloud thingy?
I keep my docs etc on a google drive cloudy thing and also use icloud a little.

Is this the 'cloud' you speak of or this there another better cloud available?

I just bounced a 1tb Transcend drive around some rough roads in India and it was rock solid. I didn't pay that much for it though. Around £50 I think. They are often on offer.

£55 on ebuyer

Is this a case of her uni being a bit out of touch with advances in technology?

If she just needs to have the ability to store her data on her own hardware rather than taking up space on the Uni department server then a 1TB USB flash drive may be adequate. These are available for about £30 e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-1TB-S..._Computing_FlashDrives_SM&hash=item3a94b27e47

I'd use one of those for transferring files from the Uni computers, which may have very expensive software packages she needs to access, to my own computer and then back up daily to a Dropbox or Google account.

Thanks for all the replies guys :thumb2

I've passed on the collectives' info and advice - it's now up to the parents ;)
