Is the route wide enough for 4x4 or is it single track
Would like to plan a trip in the jeep
Cheers Darren

most of it is yes. But I have never driven a 4x4 of road so not sure how one would do in some of the tricky bits.

cheers

a few more sent out. e-mail to markie underscore wales at hotmail dot com

if I've missed you (I'm not the best of keeping track of these things!!)

And to the question, "NO" they cannot be used for any commercial enterprise of any kind. This is a give away OK? I'm only sending it out as a guide to where you may want to ride. I'm not giving any guarantee to if these are still open.

And the reason I like to get photos is every now and again I open my e-mail and get some pics and it just cheers me up. I do not do anything with the photos, publish them or anything else. After a while I clean up my e-mail and delete them, apart from some which are just "nice" so I keep them - that's all, just like to have nice photos. God what's the world coming to?

OK legal bo**ocks over, back to normal servce :)

cheers

Portugal Offroad trails

Just got back from the BMW off road skills in Portugal. A week with Mr Pavey.

We were on the 450 GS's. I cannot begin to tell you how much fun it was. Trails varied from fast dirt to challenging rocks, to dry riverbeds to wet riverbeds. We were based in Vilarmora and went North from there.

Almost think that doing these trails with lugage would spoil the fun. Think you need to be based somewhere and go out for days out.

This is a clip from a long flowing dirt road. Mr P is in front of the guy infront of me.

Markies Route

Cheers for the route Markie.

Has anyone put it on a ZUMO 550 ?

Even if i just take the first part (24 miles), save it as a route and try and import it, my Zumo says that it has too many via points !

Cheers,

Piggers.

Hi Everybody

Though living in the UK (Cobham in Surrye), I'm originally from Portugal. I can give you two hits / large areas, where it is very easy to find places to do offroad. Two different types of terrain, all you need to do is to get on to B roads and keep an eye on minor roads that take you nearly everywhere you want.

1) Mountains and forests

2) Where Lisboa Dakar 2007 - sandy terrain with pine trees

I'm happy to assist anybody who wishes doing more detailed plans :thumb

It still wouldn't accept the routes, but i managed to get them saved as tracks, and it appears to have worked !!!

Just wondering if anyone has done this route on a 1200gs? Is it do-able, or is it trail bike only territory.

cheap hotels and B&B's near North/South route

Does anyone know if there are many cheap hotels or B&B's close to the North South route, as we were hoping to use these as opposed to camping, so as to carry less gear on the bikes ?

Cheers, Piggers

I am sure I saw some pics of it being done on a GS1200 somewhere amonst the posts either here or on Advrider and on Africa Twins.

If I come accross them again i'll post a link

yeah you should be fine. Clearly there are easy and harder bits and if you've NEVER been off road before, well.... Sand sections are not for everyones liking either.

Define "many" :) If you are willing to ride 30 mins at the end of the day I'd be stunned if you didn't find anything.

hey up Piggers
I am trying to get this all sorted for a trip late may or in june
I opened Markies routes in the Mapsorse version I am using on the trip
The magenta line does not follow the road under it
It also does not load to the 2610 I have as either there are tooooo many waypoints or its a different version
But
I went back to the Mapsorse route and deleted some of the via points with a road under them and the route started to stick down on the road - if yer follow what I am typin I then removed some of the waypoints to leave alot less
(down to 330 WP) I left the track/offroad sections as they were ( removing no via points ) It all seems to load up and open on the 2610 - I will tell you for sure after the trip I also would like to thank roddy on this site for giving me help and a link to some software that you can open any route in and convert to a mapsorse file - WinGDB3 ( http://www.sackman.info/ ).
Dont blame me of course if it dont work but I think it will :D

Cheers Markie,

30 mins off route each day shouldn't be a problem.

Cheers Mick,
One of the other guys managed to get it on his Zumo, by deleting many of the waypoints, but as I said, I got a copy of it as tracks and it goes straight in with all the Waypoints, so it is even better :thumb2

I forgot to go back and check, but I was originally trying to import a GPX file from the memory card, rather than sending straight from Mapsource to the Zumo and this may have been causing the initial problems.

We have the ferry booked for 22nd May, maybe we'll pass you on the tracks !

Cheers,

Piggers

Take a look at this thread, it shows a GS1200 as one of the bikes.

Looks like Timpo and Timolgra were present, so they may be able to offer better advice on how it coped, but as Markie pointed out, it all depends on your riding ability.

In my experience the size of the bike doesn't make that much difference unless you are in mud (maybe sand not too good either) , have to pick it up or even worse get it off of your leg ;). If you have a couple of other riders with you, you should be fine, if on your own, I wouldn't advise it....only my thoughts, I am sure someone else will have another view:D
