Take a look at this thread, it shows a GS1200 as one of the bikes.

Looks like Timpo and Timolgra were present, so they may be able to offer better advice on how it coped, but as Markie pointed out, it all depends on your riding ability.

In my experience the size of the bike doesn't make that much difference unless you are in mud (maybe sand not too good either) , have to pick it up or even worse get it off of your leg . If you have a couple of other riders with you, you should be fine, if on your own, I wouldn't advise it....only my thoughts, I am sure someone else will have another view

Thanks for that, interesting thread and write up. I wouldn't do it on my own but it would be fine with a 1200 I think. Like you say, depends on your skill and attitude really.

Route four

For those of you that are in the "know", the trail known as Route 4 is shaged, as a big motorway is being constructed right over the top of it. My travelling companion and I (whose on a 1200 GS Adventure), are probably the last to go through. Imagine the supprise of the construction gangs as they watched us ride through their unsealed motorway.

We are currently on route 8, great fun, terrific thunderstorm last night and the rain made the soft sand tracks as solid as concreate for todays ride.

glad you are having a good time!! I am very keen to know what is the situation with the 4th section, so I can keep the route up to date. I was planning going down in Sept anyway to update it, so some prior info would be very useful.

By the time you get to this section it will mostly be carved up by the motorway. As it's only just a 9 mile section, you could bypass it on the E802.

yeah it's a shame. I'll make some changes when I'm down there in Sept. Can't say I remember the exact trail but there's always options

last week

We rode the top half (down and then back) last week and came across two new motorways. One we managed to go under using a type of storm drain/tunnel that they had put under it and another that went straight across our path which was fenced. the odd thing is that we didn't encounter this on the way back ! i guess we must have screwed up somewhere along the way, heading down.
(The one with the storm drain under it was slightly off route as the stream crossing indicated on the route didn't appear to there (Bamboo lined Stream next to small farmers fields full of potatoes etc. A helpful farmer told us to follow the route through the fields and turn left at a big tree in the middle of it and it would take us to a ford to cross the stream.)

Having just ridden the top half, i wouldn't recommend doing it on anything bigger than a 650. the route is not always that easy to follow which results in a fair few u-turns on single rutted tracks, which wouldn't be so easy with an 1100-1200 !!!

Don't happen to have the by-pass mapped do you? Reason I ask is I'm going back Mid Sept to fix some of this, but knowing where it is will save some time.

I know that it was half way through track 5, i'll see if I can get it from my sat nav, if not I can show you where it is on mapquest or Google Earth.
