Am in a little bit of a rush today to get up to my hotel in time for the match so I use some motorway between Abrantes and Covilha.. The prices are displayed for each section you use and then you go through a rack of cameras . The signs indicate that it is electronic payment. So do they just send me on the bill ?

No- my experience was that you need to register a credit card. I did it simply at point of entry on the Algarve Motorway from Spain but that's the only place I saw to do it by following a bizarre motorway sign marked 'Strangers'.

Just out of interested it worked fine both times a couple of months last year and again with the same card in May and June this year, I didn't need to re-register the same card again.

A couple I met in Braganca had mentioned they had to faff about it in some fashion via the post office. If you're staying at a hotel might be worth asking there how to go about it.

Thanks

Decided to do nothing and wait and see what happens .. Will be watching for post man on my return

Don't know about the credit card bit but I thought you had to go into a post office within 5 days, give them your reg number and pay ?

The cameras are forward facing. You buy scratch cards and txt your reg along with the scratch card number. I bought a tenners worth to get me to my next destination and was unable to purchase any more. I never got the conformation reply txt so never bothered to chase the purchase. I really think that the guy who was explaining the procedure (official) was trying to say don't bother.

Yep, definitely rear facing ones too, and I got charged pretty accurately.

Even talking of toll motorways really makes me want to go back to Portugal now! :(
