Yet another unsecured network....
I'm typing this stood behind a 20kg washing machine in the basement of a Bupa carehome on the Harefield road ...it's only a slow con (1mbs) on a Belking 54g router but it always amuses me when I suddenly pop up online in an odd place..I'd only booted up the laptop to programme some Eprom chips and here I am :D

Yep. Always handy to know that when my ntl connection drops out, there are at least 4 unprotected networks in the vicinity...

Basingstoke and Aylesbury are my favourite places for unsecure wireless, try running Stumbler up and see what appears :)

It would be wrong to suggest Warlinux at this point.

Netstumbler is free to use windoze utility for showing available wireless networks, they also do a PDA version that is quite good

Warlinux - this is a small Linux distribution that gives a bootable CD, insert the CD into your laptop, restart and you have instant command line linux with all the fun wireless sniffing and password cracking toys, ideal for wardriving and boring evenings in hotels.

Fun to use when you play "see how quickly you can get you bosses laptop MAC address blacklisted" and so on.....

hmm, WarLinux sounds like fun. I'm off to go find it :)

Netstumbler is ideal for that, get yourself a tin of mango pulp from sainsburys, the can is the ideal size to make an external antenna for your wireless, it is quite directional but gives you loads of scope for free connections.

From an ethical viewpoint I make a point of never rummaging around people unsecure networks, just use them if very pushed..

Warlinux is great fun but again just to see how insecure corpoarte LAN's can be

EDIT - this is a fun site: http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/

Question? If i'm moored up in the vicinity of an open network, could somebody detect i was poaching? Reason is, I have a couple of place's i use to download bits and bobs (my 3g network is limited to 50meg per month) it would be pretty obvious it was me connected at one of the places (a canal side home miles from anywhere) the house with my boat outside woudn't be very subtle.

With a WOK setup you can be couple of Km down the road, in theory they can find you but truth be known the best they can do is block your MAC address from the network. The good news is this is rarely going to happen because if they are dim enough to use an unsecured network they are hardly going to start checking MAC addys that are connected. Normally I would expect bandwidth allowances to be exceeded before anyone really noticed.

As an example an IT guy very local to me locked his network down to MAC addys by turning all his laptops on and then adding them. Thing is he didnt actually count the connections and my wife had her laptop on at the time :thumb

People always make mistakes, as far as he is concerned he is very secure, as far as I am concerned he is not.
