This thread isn't scare mongering, fault finding, or percentage assessing etc, but intended as a factual data base to be used if any owners experience "Never heard of that before" when presenting their HP to their dealers with play in the forks.

I have spoken to BMW customer services, and of course, they deny a problem with the forks (or to be fair, wouldn't confirm any problem :D)

A lot of HP owners will now be nearing or be out of their two year warranty. Perhaps any info on this thread may assist in negotiations over replacement forks outside of the warranty.

I'll start:

New 29/6/06 0 miles
7/9/06 __ 2306m __ Replaced bushes RH leg
22/9/06 __ 3460m __ Replaced fork lowers (and bushes?) RH & LH sides
20/1/07 __ 5820m __ Replaced complete LH fork
22/9/07 __ 12115m __ Replaced complete LH & RH forks
1/8/08 __ 19000m __ Replaced complete LH & RH forks (booked in)

Although I'm unhappy about the quality (sic) of the forks, I can't fault my dealers (Williams in Manchester) for the way they have sorted my problems (all done under warranty ....so far!)

Anyone else?........

Feb 08. New forks.

Eventually replaced despite complaining of play since bike was 6 weeks old.

Ian

PS- still the best bike I have ever owned! Keep hush on the forks and other problems though. I think Johnny Boxer might bite on a swap!:augie

1 week before warranty expires complete left and right forks replaced. The new ones were send to Dr Shox. 12000 kms after the upgrade and my forks works great...

Nitride coating wearing off sliders.....replaced under warranty. To be honest the front forks are shite, i have better running gear on my 'berg. I am at the point where i am 50/50 on selling the sauce for a KTM 690 factory rallye or change out the front and rear setup.:nenau

Mine is going in on the 2nd September for "check" but pretty sure they are fekced. The blue coating has rubbed off signifcantly and just over 14k miles. Told them about this on 6k miles already and they just ahhhmmm and ahhhddddd.

Going back to SWB Hertfordshire where I bought and service the bike so let's see what happens as it only took 2 months and a fair few calls from myself to get them to do something  Apparently they were not aware of the fact that there is problems with any of the HP2's front forks :nenau They are aware now :D

Mine are not replaced as yet but BMW have told my dealer here in Canada they will do it. My warranty expires next April. 3 years here in Canada. I've got a pair of Wilber progessive springs to go in when the work is done... Still not decided to use 7.5 or 10 wt oil. Mostly off road use but I do like the SM setup for a month or two each year. New HPN 21/18 wheels soon so the fall will be all offroad:)

Other items replaced under warranty :

- Drive shaft
- Starter
- Electronics cluster
- pot for gear indication

currently just under 18,000 km

Still Luv the bike!

Update 04 September 2008

Took my HP2 in for check on Monday morning to SWB Herford. Service manager said they will have a look at it and more a case of repair than replace. Gave me a ST800 as a loan bike - interesting to say the least :eek

Picked the HP2 up this morning, forks completely knackered on 14700 miles (it was actualy like this on 6000 miles already) and need replacement Taking it back next week as the front forks are on order from Germany which takes 10 days.

Happy to get if finally sorted, nervous as I don't know what happens the next time as it will probably be out of warranty then :nenau Do I extend the warranty just for the sake of the crappy forks, get Dr Shox to do his magic or moan and complain hoping they will keep on replacing it :mmmm

Forks....

Well had my HP2E since March, and when i got it, it has 23000miles on it, now showing just over 26K, and AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, no worries other than the plastic guards have rubbed a bit on the fork lowers.
Since i am in the process of looking for a dedicated green laner, have put mine back to super moto mode and have been thinking about having the ofrks and rear shock changed/played with.

can anyone gibe me an idea of what i would expect to pay to have the front forks revalved/ new springs etc and what replacement rear shock would you all reccomend?

If the part is replaced under warranty, it is only covered the remainder of the original bike warranty. For example, if the part was replaced at month 23 from the original purchase, assuming no extended warranty, the new parts would only be covered for the remaining month of the bikes 24 month warranty.

I had mine replaced under extended warranty by BMW Battersea (!)

(my HP2 had around 11k miles.)

while Vines said is normal wear and tear so nothing to change...

go figure..!

Took mine in 4 days before warranty expired and BMW replaced the lowers and seals no questions asked. My clutch position sensor had also gone bad and they replaced the entire clutch handle assembly again with no questions asked.:clap

The only thing they didn't replace was the side stand cut-off switch which I had hot wired. They said that prior to replacing that, they needed the old broken one which I had long since thrown in the trash.

Now would probably be a good time to sell but I like the bike too much to do that.
