Is anyone aware of a way that you can get a seven digit postcode search onto a Streetpilot 2610 instead of the five, or is it a case of upgrading to a newer model GPS

Kev, I am not sure if the postcode search is a function of the software that runs the GPSR, or a function of the version of the cartography that you have installed. I don't spend enough time in the UK to have much experience with it.

The question came up once before, there is someone else here on the forum who is quite knowledgeable about it, perhaps they can summarize the situation for all of us.

It is the CN v8 NT version of the cartography that supports full 7-digit UK Postcode searching. The 26xx series and Quest 1 will not accept the "NT" cartography, so you will never get full 7-digit UK Postcode searching on those GPSR's even if you upgrade to CN v8 (not "NT").

Hope this helps

At first I thought partial postcode searching was about as useful as having half a telephone number but in fact the first five digits do specify an area. It's not quite as good as having a full postcode but if you specify a road name and the fairly small area specified by the partial code it will usually just return one hit. Full postcode search usually involves a postcode to point location lookup table so the postcode alone can get you directly to the road. So for example WC1B 3BN is Great Russell Street, but if you search for Russell in WC1B3 this should be as good (haven't got the unit handy to try it)

So how do you do a psotcode search on a 2610 then? Mine has the latest updates and CN V8 but can't suss out where to enter the postcode. In FIND i only get the option of CITY or in address NUMBER and STREET :nenau

Doh

I actually meant how do you enter the postcode into a search on the GPSR itself but guess it has the same tabs as mapsource on my pooter :nenau

Anyone know if you can put the input the first few digits of the post code into a Quest 1 to narrow down a search?

I know you can put these into mapsource but I can't see a way of putting them direct into the gps- and I've read the manual :) Interestingly the result of any 'find address' does give you the first digits of the post code when it does find the address - it just seems there is no option for the user to put them in in the first place :(
