Probably in the office. Again.
Gentlemen,

I suspect I'm being a berk and about to be publicly humiliated for not knowing how to do this, but I can't seem to enter postcodes on my Garmin V, running MapSource. It'll let me enter "cities" or "waypoints" but not postcodes - that menu option is disabled.

I'm new to this GPS malarkey, so is it just that I'm missing something bleedin' obvious, or does it just not "do" postcodes?

Cheers

Mark

Post codes work ok with my original streetpilot but only if you type in the street name as well

I have a GPS V and the postcodes do work. When you are enetering an address on the unit press FIND then ADDRESSES. You need to enter a street number and an address then you can fill in the bottom right of the screen where you can enter the postcode. You can't just enter a postcode but having the postcode helps the GPS narrow down the street and you don't have to enter a city/town name.

It works for me :D

Postcode Conversion

If you check one of my responses a few months ago. There are instructions for converting postcodes to WG format coordinates that you can enter into Mapsource.

Tis obviously not as good as if Garmin paid the money and purchased the Postcode conversion lists. That would probably be too expensive and only Microsoft can afford that sort of thing for a program such as Autoroute which sells at around £40 (discounted less).

Also you do need to use on your PC to determine the WG coordinate and be connected to the Internet...

Thanks all!

The "addresses" option on my V doesn't work - it's on the screen in a lighter grey than the other options and I can't "click" on it. Very strange.

I'm running Atlantic Autoroute 1 from Mapsource, but when I start the GPS unit up I get the message "Detail maps don't support routing" - not terribly helpful. It'll find places without any problem, but if the place I'm going is any bigger than a village that's not a great deal of help!

Looks like the web-based route is going to be the best option.

Thanks everyone for all your help.:beerjug:

How come you have a V without the City Select mapping software? They are all supplied with it, the basic one with only the UK unlocked and the deluxe version fully unlocked, i.e. all of Europe.

Have you been stitched up or did you get it at a bargain price?

Hi Adam

Curiouser and curiouser...

I've got the City Select software, but I'm definitely doing something wrong somewhere. Unlock codes are all fine though. I'm going to lock myself in the office with a bottle of red and fiddle about (with the GPS of course!) until I've sorted it.

I'll let you know what happens.

Cheers

Sorry if this sounds obvious but have you uploaded maps to the GPS unit? You won't be able to look up addresses until you have. Once you've done that you can only look up addresses within the maps you've loaded.

Either that or the loaded maps have inadvertently been turned off in the mapsource section. Go to the screen showing the map, press 'menu', highlight 'mapsource info' then press 'enter'. There should be a list of the loaded maps all with a tick in the box on the left.

If there's no list then there are no maps.

If there is a list but no ticks press 'menu', highlight 'enable all' and press 'enter'.

Apologies if you knew all this (eggs suck granny etc) but the menus are a bit of a maze at first.

I have the same problem on the (find screen) is it just addresses that you can,t access.
because on mine it,s( point,s of intrest , addresses , and intersections.
any info on how to unlock these (anyone)
cheers

Weird - I just disabled all my maps to see what happened and all the find menus are still available, I just can't find anything (obviously).

Maybe it's something to do with updating both the GPS unit and the Mapsource software as well as loading maps?

GPS is up to v2.5 and the Mapsource v5.4 - both .exe files from Garmin's website.

Let me know how you get on as I'm intrigued (although I believe it's pilot error at the moment :D )

Adam,

Er - thanks. Strangely, having uploaded the maps, it seems to work a lot better now.
