Pot Holes

Few years ago I rode from Aberdeen to Dakar.
The worst roads on the whole trip were in Aberdeen.

Some of the back roads round here - you can't even cycle on they're so bad.
The other day, I had to drive up on the verge to get round one because my 4x4 would have bottomed out.

how is this joke dealership saying you did it - get them to prove it was bumps that did it, rather than they make shit budget crap and fence it with marketing for 3 times its real value

Sort of what I was thinking. With no deformity to the rim why conclude pothole damage and are two new tyres necessary.

How much impact should a standard rim be able to take? These bikes are sold all over the world and some countries have far worse roads than we do. If big pot holes cause this much damage then surely there should be more instances of damaged rims out there. Spoked wheels are more forgiving but at the end of the day it’s an ‘adventure bike’ sold with cast wheels. They should be up to the job.
Maybe this is a manufacturing issue?

Now , has BMW had previous with cast wheels ? believe it or not but that recall is still live.

Its a GSA with spoked wheels, they are claiming there are cracks eminating from the spoke in the rim!

I knew casts were not as forgiving but I thought the purpose of spokes was that they were more robust.

Try “not fit for purpose “with the dealer , a small claims court would laugh at BMW’s roughty tufty brochure pictures

, at least if you get BMW to pay 50% that would help ( that probably cost price to them anyway)

I assume your tyres are ok and the rims are not deformed?

Having new tyres fitted in May the fitter called me over to show a slight outward kink to the RH side of the rim. No paint damage, no damage to outgoing tyre.
I really couldn't remember hitting anything to have caused this.
Anyway the new tyre went on and was able to be balanced.
No loss of pressure or wobble, so continued to ride it but with that nigggle in the back of my mind

So, when the the tyres came up for replacement in November I contacted a local wheel restorer about 4 miles from me that I know a few car users had used with glowing reports.
After talking to him I decided to get the rim straightened and both wheels re-painted. They were 18 month old, 14k miles in and the black finish on the rear wheel looked dull
Job done. £240 for paining, £60 for wheel to be checked for any cracks and straightened.
Decided to go for a very dark grey metallic.

His process is a black undercoat then 2 powder coats both set in an oven, then laquered
Got them back Wednesday and very please with the service and finish
Cost me £55 by good mechanic to remove the bearing, pressure monitors and tyres, which he replaced with new bearing, new tyres that I supplied, balanced with black weights. Excellent job. He charged me £55.95 including the bearings.

On another note, I am in battle with my local council over damage to my car tyre from a pothole on a main 'A' road Round 1 is total deniability by them.
FOI request in for their policy and definition regards classification as to size etc and also maintenance and inspection records.........

Think you paid well over the odds. I had 2 1200 GS LC wheels powder coated in gloss black
All I did was remove the front discs. Powder coater removed tpms sensor and tyres. Wheel bearings fell out during heating.
They refitted tyres and tpms. Cost £100 for the pair.
I put new bearings in £12 quid. and had the wheels balanced £10.

About to have another pair done in satin black over Xmas for a newly acquired to the fleet TDM 900 :D

My TL1000R had an issue on the rear - it is often the animals at the tyre fitters - they bend/flat spot the rims forcing the tyre off if they don't pop the bead both sides first and do it carefully

I am well happy with the process and the finish by both the wheel guy and the mechanic, so was happy to pay for the quality and the finish I wanted
If I had had satin or gloss or matt black would have been 60 quid cheaper

The old paint taken off
The masking off, the 4 coats.
I wanted the tyres, bearings etc off and back on by someone particular who I knew would take great care of the paint finish and I can trust

Hi everyone
I have a spoked front wheel from my 1200 adventure with a slightly bent rim, no damage from potholes and not sure how it happened. It may have been like that from new, or bend by the tyre fitter on a machine.
It's only a slight run out.

Does any one know a firm that can true the rim please?
Thanks
