As a newbie, let me buy you a virtual beer and introduce myself.

I am currently in the market for a 12GS. It will be an addition to the garage (Duke 999 and RVF already in there), used mainly for two up touring (need luggage!), so I have a fairly strict budget, but it is stretching by the day! I am after a fairly new bike, low mileage, for around £8k (I started at 6.5k when considering a brand new Tiger!). My local dealer is offering me a brand new one, heated grips and ABS for £9300 which isn't a bad deal all things considered and suggests they are starting to be discounted. However this is just a price stretch too far.

I have also been looking at a nearly new (under 100 miles) non-abs bike with heated grips, the dealer is looking for £8600 but he tells me that I will struggle to sell it again as it is non ABS. Personally I don't have an issue with a lack of ABS, but if the bike is going to be unpopular I would thinking I might get it for £8k, unfortunately the dealer is only prepared to knock £100 off the asking price.

From experience, how negiotable are the "marked up" prices in dealers on used machines. I know this is like asking how long is a piece of string, and will vary from dealer to dealer but my experience so far has been that a used bike price is not open to negiotation but a new bike is. This tends to suggest that dealers are keen to shift brand new bikes as there is more profit on new stuff, even with a discount (8% seems the limit), than used machines...and this is the opposite of the logic I would have applied to the situation.

From the combined experience of those on this forum, for £8k what can I expect to get, given the number on the used market appears to be increasing? A year old bike with ABS and Grips, and maybe some luggage?

The other question is, in reality just how hard is it to resell a GS without ABS? The dealers are telling me they wouldn't even take it in, and to be honest I don't see any out there without ABS.

And finally, given that the GS12 has been out now for nearly 2 years, are there any batches where reliablity was worse than others. For example are the 2005 bikes better built than 2004 or are they all much the same?

Any GS specific buying advice would be greatly received and hopefully I will be joining the fold fairly soon !

Hello and welcome

The only advice i can give is to put the other two bikes into storage, as i doubt they'll get used much after you get the 12gs :thumb

Shep :bounce1

First off, hello and welcome.

I bought my 1200 from the dealers last september, when there wasn't so many pre owned ones about, and paid list price for it.

If i had to do it again i'd have a good look at the For Sale and Wanted on here. There's some very nice looking machines up for grabs. If you bought one of them, theres a good chance you'd then have all the associated bells and whistles that you'd only end up buying for a new one.

If your not bothered about the ABS then don't get it. I dont think it would stop people buying the bike ( mind you, after a bit of riding it i don't think you'll be wanting to sell anyway )

As for price and what you'll get for it have a look at these recent posts.

I've been reading your post and I've got to be honest, I'm not impressed with your dealer and what seems to me to be mis-information concerning non ABS bikes.

Owing to delivery times from BMW, dealers tend to order their "stock" bikes with certain accessories as part of the spec, ABS and heated grips being the most standard items.

If you want a non ABS bike in fact it can take longer to get one as few dealers will have one on their stock list.

To say it will be harder to sell is total bulls**t in my opinion, if I was in your shoes I would be looking for another dealer.

The dealer seems to be contradicting himself. He won't take in a non-abs bike because they won't sell... and yet he won't discount the one he has got :nenau If they don't sell then surely he should be trying to flog it off for whatever he can get...?

BTW, hello and welcome! Mines a pint...

Some the 2004 batch had battery problems already after a week or two of not running.

You will get a very good bike for your money if you can't quite go for new, nothing wrong with that did the same thing myself then spent the money I saved on luggage, white indicator lenses and remus front pipe :D

I have not had ABS before but since having the GS and a woman doing a u-turn in front of me in the wet and being able to stop OK I would always want it in the future. Some others prefer non-ABS. :nenau

I love the BMW panniers but use a Givi E52 top box as it takes 2 helmets or more booze

From one Aprilia owner to another - if great minds think alike you will enjoy the 12 GS.

One thing to bear in mind though....you can get an 05 unreg. RSVR for GBP6500 (v 8500 new) :nenau ....for when needs must!

both very enjoyable machines and completely different experiences

ABS has saved my bacon a couple of times. The first few times in kicks in (especially at the front) it feels wierd, but it's quickly learnable and I'm a convert. You can brake very heavily without triggering the ABS.

BMW luggage and accessories are expensive. Better, cheaper is available (as you know from this site!)

I'd find another dealer, or look for a private used one, the non ABS are selling well, and there seems to be customers buying them, quite a few on this forum have non ABS, I'm on my 3rd GS all non ABS and my local dealer always gives a good part ex, and he has No problem reselling them, my last part ex was only in the showroom for 3 days :)

Dear all,

As the system seems to have crashed after I posted my update yesterday, I thought I would just take the opportunity to once again thank you for your advice and comments. I took the advice and went to a different dealer, and the upshot was that I am picking up a brand new GS, non ABS, on the 29th April...things happen quickly and I didn't see that one coming! In the end I thought it better to go for a brand new non ABS bike than paying the same money for a year old one with ABS and about 6000 miles on it. This also allows me to get the 2006 colour, granite.

The budget was stretched, to breaking point, but I am sure it will be the better long term decision. The new dealer that I spoke to didn't come up with much better a deal, managed to get some discount, but the main advantage was that they were much more pleasant to speak to than the other idiots who on reflection it seems didn't want to sell me a bike.

So I am about to join the fold...looking forward to getting the running in period out of the way and then doing some touring to make the financial pain worth while!

Cheers
