My centre stand on my 2012 GSA is a little tired and has signs of surface rust. Now, some might say its character but whilst I have some time on my hands I was considering:
1. Rubbing down and rattle can painting myself - may not last long
2. Powder coating
3. Stove enamelling

2 and 3 can be done locally to me as a business has recently opened up again.

So the question really is 2 or 3 or something else?

I had mine shot blast and powdercoated along with the side stand and the complete rear frame I’m very pleased with the results and I’m sure it will last longer than a rattle can as the shot blast really gets all the rust off

Powder coat and stove enamelling are both good but will both eventually wear through on the centre stand pads .

Last one I got done that lasted was blasted and hot dip galvanised (done in a batch by my neighbour when his work was getting trailer chassis parts galvanised ) then I etch primed it and painted it with black truck chassis paint , easily touched up and never rusted

Sounds a bit more specialised with the galvanising and yes I wouldn't expect the stand pads to last beyond first contact however it was done. |I think |I'm favouring powder coating at the moment. mainly because my local shop does it and I can include the visit in my daily exercise route :eyebrow

A little unsure of the stove enamelling attributes, but I know from previous experience that the powder coat layer can be breached and then water can enter penetrate under the intact layer leading to the whole lot peeling back from the steel. I've recommended zinga before on other rust questions, and that's because it worked great on my landy. It's supposed to be applied on grit blasted raw steel, but I used an aggressive wire brush to get a key onto the bare steel before applying the zinc coating with a paintbrush I wasn't bothered about, and then over painted with a yacht paint.

I think I paid £90 to get the rear frame side stand and centre stand shot blast and powder coat. My Labour was about 3 days

I've contacted my local powder coating guru for a price and will post up when I get a reply too. :beerjug:

I’ve had powder coating done before, but it had a zinc coating,(not galvanisation) first to combat the risk of corrosion caused by flaking.
I’m very happy with the results soo far.

On my 2012 the paint wasn’t too bad after 7 years and 35k so if the cheap shit original thin paint had lasted that long powder coat should see it out!!

Just done the centre and side with rattle can frame paint, good finish but not at all resistant to even a rub from the boot.
Might touch up and apply clear helicopter tape.

A firm local to me has quoted £30 +vat to grit blast and powder coat my centre stand

That sounds reasonable.....it’s the refitting that’s the bugger

You might want to add a bicycle chain Lizard skin to protect the cross rail.

Other makes are available.

Number one, but with black Hammerite.

It’s got to be shot-blast, zinc phosphate primer & black, this is off my 2013 GSA and the centre stand from my CBR1100, I did do my GS stand as well, 2nd time now, lasted 3 years.

Looks very good. Can I ask where you had the stand done and was that the same process for all the bits?
