powder coating cylinder heads

Ive noticed a 'crazing effect' on the cylinder heads on my 05 gs , its almost like the paints cracked , has anyone tried having theirs powder coated ??
 
I've seen somewhere on here that powder coating shags them as it reacts with the magnesium. One of mine has also "crinkled".

had mine powder coated no prob.although triple s wouldnt touch them,so i sent them to elite enginering and powder coating,and a cracking job they did too.
 
BMW body shop in Grimsby quoted me £60 to paint them matt black. Haven't had it done yet as I have to take them off and I am too lazy. It's a winter job for me...:nod
 
If I were you I'd stick to paint, perhaps a 2-pack.

The problem is the magnesium alloy content of the covers, I just wrecked a pair putting them in for powder coating, I was told it was at my risk and it didn't work out. They were a sorry state, looked as if they had partially melted. Some have reported sucess, I guess it depends on the process the powder coater uses.
 
I've just been to visit TCPS regarding powder coating of my rocker box covers. Steve seems very experienced at coating magnesioum and had a couple of mag wheels in progress when I visited. He is known on ther forum and has done work for members before.

Not yet, going back tomorrow to look at a sample Steve has made using the nearest colour he has. If it's not a good match and if the weather holds out I'll trek up to MRK in Blockley for them to take a look. Will post results.
 
Steve doesn't have a grey anywhere near my rocker covers. He did suggest that he could do a powder coat primer ready for someone with a spectrograph colour matching machine to do a topcoat. It's been done before and I trust him that this would work.

If you have silver rocker covers you would probably be ok, I think Steve could match near enough.
 
Forgive perhaps my lack of knowledge here .... Should the engine not be heat treated rather than powdercoated? Due to heat from the engine when running - similar to exhausts? :confused:
 
The rocker covers don't get that hot, and most motorbike engines are painted, though some manufacturers, that means you Ducati and KTM, use emusion paint and it falls off. I used Halfords spray on the clutch cover of my KTM and it seemed ok, or at least it was when I sold it.
