Powder Coating Spoked wheels

Just putting the feelers out ready for a winter project. Is there a down side to powdercoating the spoked wheels. Whilst I would love to go down the stainless road I much prefer the all black look.

Anybody suggest any cons as opposed to pros

If you mean a complete spoked wheel you can do it but once you have the spokes cannot be tweaked if they loosen off unless you remove the powder coating.
I have found on every powder coated wheel I have had that they eventually become damaged on tyre changes and look crap

Have you considered spraying with plasti dip? Did the rear hub on my GS last year and still looks fine, can always touch up or peel off if you change your mind.

My local Powder coater quoted me 30 nicker a complete wheel which includes an acid dip, sand blast and satin black finish.

Not really a bad price that I suppose could be repeat every two years or so....

Elite coatings, Low Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne did mine. Acid etch primer and powder coated gloss black. Crackin job they did. £70. You have to take your front bearings out and screw bolts into the disc retainer threaded holes.

Interested to see too as I want to do something with mine. Im thinking strip the wheels myself, powdercoat hubs and powdercoat or polish rims and then get Devon wheel co to rebuild with ss spokes. They have quoted £80 per wheel for spokes and £80 per wheel labour.

Have another think about it because removing the spokes is notoriously the hardest job!

Quoted me 600 quid for a full rebuild.

Angle grinder - just cut through em.

That's how I saw the spokes being removed quickly if you don't want to reuse them that is.

Have just finished stripping my spare wheel down..front was fine back the back was a mother f,,,,,er that to heat up rim at every spoke hole to get out..having rims anodised.hubs are still a question mark might anodise or powder coat..waiting till rims are done to see what the bloke says is best..I know my powder coat bloke don't like doing spoke wheels cause of the flex they get which brakes of the coating in the end..

In my opinion powder coated spoked wheels look horrible. Either bite the bullet and get them rebuilt or buy some alloys. Powder coated spokes always end up breaking the coating and corroding unseen, just causing more problems in the future.

I'm with MattW on this one. Ifg you get the whole assembly coated flex in the wheel will eventually crack or bubble the powdercoating and corrosion will follow. I do like the Plastidip option, you could put a new colour as you moods take you.

Tend to agree with Matt too. The alloy is too soft so at tyre changes i can't see how the coating can stay on along the rim edge? Personally i'd either live with tatty wheels or buy some second hand (one at a time even). Probably cheaper than a re-build...

Strip the rims off and get them anodised, powder coat the hubs, new spokes if your rich and your good to go
