Have finally got round to stripping down the R80G/S I got from Pete Keys on this forum and took the frame to be powder coated yesterday. I'm not sure if the nearest to correct original colour for the frame should be gloss black or satin black though, anyone who has had this job done know the answer? Frame has previously been powder coated, so no clues there.:)

Gloss black frames always look crap and far too bright. My powder coater does a Matt finish that looks very similar to the original bmw finish. I'd call it satin though.

this is the Matt finish. Your coater should have sample plates to give you an idea.

Aerocoat do a satin black which I had my R80RT's subframe finished in - looks very similar to the frame...

Thanks Rob & Mike, will make sure its Satin black

R80G/S Powder coating.

Had the same worries myself, just had my G/S powder coated Satin Black and i have to say it looks a treat, not factory but really close. Triple S in Bingley have done a lovely job.
I am informed the original finish was an eggshell paint which gave a nice matt/satin finish but just about impossible to find a refinisher who can supply the product.
Just about to start reassembling...on with my winter project and good luck with yours.

I have used Triple S myself, in the past, but Aerocoat is only about 30 mins from me and also do a great job:thumb2 I need to sort out some vapour blasting for the cylinders & heads now, the rest of the cases I'll do by hand.

I dont now how thats supossed to work with the under coate thou I will have to ask my powder couter because normally everry thing gets shot blasted to bare metal because its staticaly aplyed it works sort of licke a magnet then the Powder gets backed on a bit licke putting a pizza in the oven and the cheese melting !!
so hows that suposed to work if you primer it first :duno
the good thing is its cheep but the bad thing is it strips of in big chunks not licke paint !!! ever seen it come of your Garden furniture licke swings and hamucks if that would happen to my frame after a few years I would cry :(

Having got my r90s finally in good running shape and back on the road, I'm about to start on prettying up. Can anyone recommend a good blast&coat place in the North London/Watford area? Nor folks a bit far for me to ride with metal bits lashed on.

Is Dartford too far for you? My frame was powdercoated by these people (and given a zinc chromate undercoat which few do) -

No, dartford is fine. I will contact them; thanks!

Paul-

I spoke with them, thanks. Nice folks. I will give them a try.

Any idea which of their colours corresponds to the old airhead AVUS 086 frame black? Otherwise I will eyeball it.
