Power cable for Etrex Vista HCx ?

I have a Garmin Etrex Vista HCx which I'd like to conect to the acc plug on my 800gs. I've read somewhere that I need a special lead and should not plug straight into the bikes power socket. I think the etrex series run a different voltage !!?
Has anyone experience or knowledge on this
