My laptop has an 18V output. How long can I safely use it off the bikes power socket (without battery on bike suffering)

Your laptop is 18v Input?

In that case - you can't shove 12v into an 18v battery.......... no current will flow. :rob

So - you can run the laptop for as long as its own battery lasts :blast

you can get cigarette plug adapters on ebay will will step up voltage (at low current) to about 20 V, (I have one at home that does 12, 13.5, 15, 18 and 20V) with a broad selection of plug connectors. About 6-7 quid from memory

Seek and ye shall find

I stand corrected! I do have the cigarette adaptor that allows me to plug laptop in to bike. So - same question, how long can I run laptop without adversely affecting bikes battery!

With cigarette adaptor plugged in to bike, I have ran the laptop ok; - forgot to mention I have plugged in a car laptop adaptor between the cigarette socket and the laptop (it steps up voltage from bike batteries 12v to 18v required for laptop) . The laptop works fine - original question still applies - apologies for confusion!

Assuming the engine of the bike is on, it wont affect the bikes battery. (The bike has a 720 watt alternator and your laptop consumes maybe 10-20 watts?)

If the engine is off, I believe the factory power sockets automatically cut out after 15 mins (a BMW canbus feature) that is meant to stop any accessory usage affecting the battery too much.

If you have installed your own socket direct from the battery and the engine is not running, and normal battery life is say 2-3 hours ... and the bikes battery is probably 20+ times larger than a laptop battery, I would say you could run it 24 hrs before I would want to kick the engine over for a bit
