Powering GPS using accessory socket

Anyone power their GPS by plugging it directly into the accessory socket?

I've been told by my dealer that this is not recommended as the cable can come loose from the powerlet socket and cause electrical damage to the GPS device. Anyone else heard of this?

I have a StreetPilot III and want to connect it to the accessory socket using one of the Garmin powerlet cables as I don't use it on the bike very often and don't need it to be permanently wired in.

i power my sp3 via a cable from the under seat socket and then run the cable up to the gps, no problems so far.
