When I first bought my GSA I noticed that the pre- load adjusting Knob was quite stiff to turn. It never went all the way to maximum. Now it appears to be just slipping round when I try to wind the pressure up.

Anybody come across this one before?

Cheers BB.

Pre load

Had a similar problem. Take the screw out of the centre of the pre-load knob and remove. You may be surprised to find a load of crud, including salt embedded inside the knob and also on the winding mechanism. Clean it off (wash off any salt that you can see. Remove any white salt deposits with a fine wet and dry and apply a light coat of grease.

If that doesn't work try BMW warranty.

And watch out for the spring and ball detent mechanism flying out, if you lose itas most folk do, dont worry all it gives you is the click.

OK.

Thanks guys, I had already removed the knob and had the spring and ball bearing pop out, I was lucky and found them so I put them back. There was no contamination to speak of. The knob just turns and will not wind the suspension up to its hardest setting.

Will see what B*W say.

Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply, appreciated.

My last GS suffered from the same problem, in the end the dealer replaced the complete rear shock absorber assembly under warranty.

Bronco - mine ended up exactly the same last year. The plastic handwheel is fixed by a screw onto a bolt which turns as you turn the wheel. That then changes the pre-load. What happens is that the bolt starts to sieze. You turn t he handwheel, it all becomes increasingly difficult, until the handwheel slips around the bolt head because it is plastic and cannot take the force involved.
It will require a complete new rear shock absorber as the pre-load adjuster is not a seperate part.
I make sure t hat I wind it fully in and out every so often to make sure it does not seize up again.

Right.

Thanks BTBR and Flying Banana,

Will get on to B*M without delay.

Thanks chaps.

Had the same problem, removed the stripped plastic handwheel, sprayed the bolt with WD40, loosened the bolt with a spanner, and bought another plastic handwheel from Motoradd Central, I think it cost under a tenner.
Just keep an eye on it and spray some WD40 into it on a regular basis.

Have called B*W today and they say they will order a new adjuster....! they will call me when it arrives........I told them that I had heard I might need the full assembly including the shocker but they said they wernt aware of this....!

Will let you know how I get on. :)

they say they will order a new adjuster

Bronco - I suggest it is worth clarifying with them what they have ordered. it sounds like the plastic wheel is to be replaced. That is not a problem, provided that the adjuster mechanism underneath has not seized up. If it has, and cannot be freed, then any new wheel will just fail again.

Thats logical Bro.

Will call B*W again and point this out.

Cheers for that... ;)
