reading a thread on here ( it was in the 650/700/800/ ) section and they were stating that they had to up the preload on the rear and the esa was on sport ,that confused me ( not hard ) I thought that the esa adjusts the spring preload aswell as the damping .

It does.
It does on the 1200 but the 800 is described as semi ESA and the electronics adjust the damping on the rear shock only. The front forks have no adjustment for either preload or damping and the rear shock has a manual adjuster knob for preload. At least that is the system on my 2013 bike. Earlier or later models may differ.

Now I'm confused. You asked what does the ESA do in the 1200 hexhead section not the 800 and it's the 800 you want to know about. What have I missed?
The Comfort/Normal/Sport setting on the 1200 only relates to damping, there are other settings that independently adjust the preload.
