Does anyone know what this is? it's suddenly appeared in the configurator of a few (if not all) models but without an explanation.

On bmw cars it means an ex bmw internal vehicle. My daughter bought a used car from bmw that had press preparation on the spec and I assume it’s the same for bikes. Dealer said it can be anything from a press bike if being sold as used or a show stand bike ( think NEC bike show etc) if it’s 0 miles and as new.

I was thinking the same, but why would it be a selectable item in the configurator? Would have thought that an ex demo would be a press bike and would be dealt with as a secondhand machine.

I’m not sure it’s just a guess but maybe bikes with 0 miles that have just been used for a photo shoot or show stand are not sold as used in the normal sense ( ridden) but have to be declared as having been used internally for other purposes. Maybe they put aside display bikes for shows that never happened and now want to offload them.

Does selecting it reduce the price ?

Did some research and it means they go through a different pdi process. BMW dealers call it the special attention option. It’s only open to registered press companies apparently and normally only selectable by dealers. So not sure if it’s a website issue with the config tool or whether anyone can now select it and then they follow it up later to see if your eligible.

It wil mean that they are probably tweaked , just like back in the 70's when the press bikes were ' better' ie faster an handled better.

Genuine 100 mph 250's with modified fork yokes , in modern times it will mean a modified map to give that little bit more

So in this case, basically all the reviews you read, and watch on YouTube don't represent a bike you actually get then?

Nah don’t believe the bs you read on here about press bikes. The dealer that commented ( where I got the info from ) said it’s purely accessory spec as in press vehicles have all the options fitted and they have a longer pdi test run so the press don’t have to consider break in etc.

I suspect especially in the eu these days that it is probably illegal to supply a press bike or car in a different state of tune to that on offer to the public as it would be mis-representation of the product. Historically I know for sure some marques did alter specs for testers ( I have first hand experience of that ) but we’re talking years ago.

Press Preparation - they apply an extra coat of wax and buff it up to a nice shine so that it stays shiny upto 10 mins after taking it out of the dealer forecourt - so that you can take pictures to post on your favourite mass media - FB/Insta/Etc. Once it start rusting 10 minutes into the ride, you would not like to post any more pictures anyways :P

Don’t suppose it matters so much to me but it just seems strange to have it as an option for Joe Public to spec in the config.
