Problem fitting my wilbers rear shock

Hi

I just bought a wilbers rear shock and am having problems fitting it. The destructions state have the sticker right side up which I take from a translation of german means have the wilbers sticker facing up meaning you can read it and they mean the large WILBERS sticker.
If this is the case then the preload adjuster will be situated on the off side of the bike when fitted.
The problem I have is that the lower part of the shock is about 1-2mm wider than the gap! There is what I would describe as a metal bush on the internal piece of the nearside of the swingarm. This just sits slightly proud on the inside which I feel is causing the problem.
Now should this be flush? If it is meant to be slightly proud then the bottom of the shock is too wide. I can't see this as many people have bought bespoke wilber shocks and I cannot find any posts on this site relating to my type of problem.
Has anyone got any advice as my GSA is sat in the garage feeling sorry for itself? I have an 04 plate 1150 GSA. :nenau

I have the adjuster on the offside.. fitted exactly as pictured in the instructions.

Chap who fitted mine did the job in 35 minutes.... with no problems whatsoever. it was a straight swap.

Hope you get an answer to your other query matey!! (won't be long - i'm sure)

Thanks for the piccie and I reckon it would of taken me 35 mins but did'nt want to get the large hammer out just yet!! I am hoping someone will tell me it is ok to hit the protuding bit with a hammer to make it flush and I will be away! They look the biz on your bike fella!

Hi Baz

The same thing happened to me.

I would soak the bush in oil overnight before trying to force it out.

Did you already get the old shock out?
If the old shock can't be removed from the lower mount, just loosen the M10 mounting bolt a bit (DO NOT REMOVE the bolt) and then try to force an old knife blade in between the shock and the bush.
(This might ruin the bush and a replacement part costs around £12.)

Once you got your old shock out, use a M10x40 screw with hexhead, a M10 nut and some washers to push the bush out enough to mount the new shock.
Whatever you try, do not damage the thread on the side of the driveshaft!
I used the large washer shown on the right to protect the thread while pushing the bush out.

The pipe shown on the left is only needed if you want to completely remove the bush to replace it. It has an outer diameter of 18mm and is approx. 25mm long.

Folks A big thanks for the advice! I am going to give the bush a quick soaking now before i hit the sack. I will let you know how I got on....Thanks again

I used your technique and that solved the problem! :clap A big thanks again and thanks to everyone for the other advice.
I will keep the bolt as I have two years or 20,000 miles until ithe shock has to come off again for a service.
