Sorry I know this has been raised before-but this problem is annoying me. I have had 14 bikes over the years-and none of them have had problems with going up the box from 2-3 (at faster revs) and down (from 4-5 only). One of the last bikes was an R1100R-no problems with that box at all-in fact it was sweet.
I understand that the R has a different box to the GS though.
Sherlocks (great garage) have ridden mine and said they think the gearbox is fine-but I'm still able to make it grind from 2-3 far too often. My bike is a 95-with a replacement post 97 gearbox fitted about 13,000 miles ago. The bike hs done 56,000. Sherlocks said that they could work on the pre 97 boxes-but said "nothing they could do with a post 97.
I have read the comments on linkage and Prestige suggested that could be the trouble-but what do you lube-it's just a metal bar isn't it? (ok with adjuster nuts on it)
Please help this is spoiling my riding pleasure and possibly destroying my box.

A journey of at housand miles begins with a single step Mao:mad:

stiff gear linkage!!

gbtoda,
have a closer look at your gear linkage, you will find it has two small circlips, one at the top,one at the bottom just under the ball part take these out and pop the linkage off fill both ends with grease and put pop it back on the excess grease will be forced out just wipe that away and your ready for another 56,000 miles.Andy

Also, make sure you have the height of the lever adjusted to suit the way that YOU sit on the bike. I found that my ankle ran out of upward movement before the next gear engaged properly thus causing missed gears on the up changes. I adjusted it downwards a bit and solved the problem.

For changing up through the gears, try pre-loading the gear lever before using the clutch. Helps to make things a lot smoother.

Sorry, I've no suggestions for 5th to 4th.

Thanks very much guys this is great advice which immeadiately makes sense-I shall attack it tomorrow-Ta v much indeed.
